Biography
Furless tundra are the subject of dragon lore across flights and species. No adult or even adolescent furless tundra exist since the gene mutation that causes the lack of fur also kills the hatchling while still in the egg, sometimes before the egg is even laid. Nevertheless, they do sometimes happen, leaving parents distraught and lairs horrified when they wonder why that egg isn’t hatching and crack it open. No furless hatchling has ever survived hatching.
Furless tundra are often used as cautionary tales for hatchlings, ranging from benevolent annoyances to more malevolent roles.
Lazy tundra hatchlings who don’t groom their fur will have it stolen by a furless tundra, since they clearly don’t appreciate it as much as a furless one would. These tundras tend to look goofy, with scattered bits of fur glued to themselves for warmth and big scowls from always complaining about the cold. The leftover fur from a hatchling’s first molt is often presented as an offering to them.
Dreaming of a furless tundra trying to incubate your eggs is an omen that one or more of the eggs is dead or will die soon. These tend to resemble actual furless tundra the most, looking distinctly fetal with large eyes and emotionless faces. They sing to hatchlings as they steal their souls away to extend their own lives.
One Ridgeback fable tells of a male who accidentally destroyed a nest full of eggs while borrowing and fled. He thought he’d escaped punishment, but then started noticing a furless tundra following and watching him who nobody else could see. Each day, it got closer and closer to him until he woke up one morning to find it gone. Confused, he left the lair to search and found it amongst the nests in the nesting grounds. He attempted to destroy it but was stopped by his lair, who thought he was after the eggs.
He was so afraid of reprisal for what he did to the other nest that he couldn’t explain what was happening. When his mate returned home and learned of what he apparently tried to do, she killed him. This tundra and those of its ilk tend to look the most distorted, with blindingly white skin that stretches taut across bone and with sunken red eyes, and are also completely silent.
