The breeze ruffled his fins, flattening them against his head. The sky was blindingly bright, and as he scaled the rocky face, seemed truly endless. His muscles bunched under his scales and ached terribly, but the wind blowing fiercely against his face dried the tears that had been there earlier and numbed the pain of it all.
He could feel how his eyes struggled against the sun, though. His claw slipped from its hold. The rock beneath sliced his palm, but he hardly felt it. Who would it matter to, if he fell? The cut on his hand hurt less than the open wound inside that seemed to never heal. He'd never excelled at reading and studying. At first he'd tried twice as hard as his siblings, then as he saw them surpass him effortlessly, he stopped trying at all. It had felt like a victory. But he quickly learned that victories won alone feel like nothing and taste like sand. His family abandoned him, unable to see past his rude exterior and quiet strengths unlike theirs. He'd started climbing when he was young. It was pious at first, when his parents nodded and compared it to the Arcanist's pilgrimage, but soon became, to them, nothing more than a party trick. Not to him, though. To him it was more. He finally gripped the summit of the mountain. The tears were fully gone now, the sting of rejection dulled, but he did feel something new. It felt like an ending and a beginning all at once. At the top of the greatest peak he'd ever climbed, some new and yet very old part of him resided. |
