Biography
__._ |
They call him a prodigy, but prodigies aren't the rarest thing in the world. He ducks under the word, brushing off his shoulders as he does. He was born in a little village in the middle of the jungles which surrounding Himikoro in a crescent moon, not long after the War of Spirits ended. He always had a talent for calligraphy and art, stealing the few paintbrushes and ink-pots he could get in order to practice. It wasn't the most useful talent for a boy living somewhere where hunting and farming would be better skills, but the sense of community was strong enough that no one was discourage a boy from his favourite hobby. His little village was still mending, and he was a young teen when the exalted, blessed heir to the throne, Kuroharuhime Tenkubashi, showed up. The people barely knew that to do with themselves, falling over themselves to bring her gifts of the meagre things they owned. She turned them down with a hand, shaking her head ever so slightly to and fro. She was not here for tribute, but to help rebuild the village. She was flanked by others, members of the spiritual warriors known as the Tenshi. It was Tsubaki's first impression of the Tenshi, and he was instantly transfixed. How could he not be? Together with the princess, they hefted huge beams they had brought with them, cleared the rumble, cut down the trees and rebuilt the houses that had been felled by the path of the great-dog-demon in the years prior. They undid years of damage in a matter of weeks, and with them around everyone felt safe in a way he didn't even realise they hadn't before now. Determined to create that feeling himself, he grabbed his ink and his brush and showed them to Kuro. Beneath her veil she would arc an eyebrow in interest, beckoning the tenshi she brought with her to mention something. Tsubaki strained to hear- is that not Muromachi's magical sealing, or close to it? How fortuitous we'd fine someone here. Although at first his mother protested, protective arms around him, he was so eager and so excited to go along with them back to the city that eventually they relented, for how could they turn down someone so important? Tsubaki was taken back to Himikoro, where those tenshi who flanked Kuro took him to Muromachi Inouye, one of the tenshi commanders. Tsubaki, full of enthusiasm, snatched the scroll from where it was laying and without any instruction began to paint. "Oh, I see why you brought him here. Seems you were destined to be here, kid." Considering that Muromachi's magic was unique and brand new, the speed at which Tsubaki learnt it was absolutely startling. He all but immediately understood how to incorporate magic into his brushstrokes, giving life to the ink in all sorts of forms, depending on how it is done. In a scant few years he shot up in the tenshi's ranks, his ability to create and cast offensive seals in the heat of combat with nothing but a stroke of the brush being invaluable. As he honed his craft with a feverish obsession, it was discovered that not only could he attack, he could cast barriers on others, disrupt the chaotic magic which surrounds yokai under rampage, and cleanse areas of any hostile intent. That last one was a big one- the sort of magic only the strongest and most mysterious can do. (Something Ashitaka Tokaiyama can do, and was very surprised to see an ordinary dragon doing too, if in a lesser form.) Here's the thing, though. Despite what you might think, Tsubaki has no ill-will towards the yokai. He understands that they're quite terrifying, especially the bigger ones, but they're just creatures. They don't mean to do what they do. They have to exist, to live, take up space. To try and get rid of them all would just cripple the ecosystem. They also make wonderful muses for painting, if you're lucky enough to find one sitting or sleeping. As such, the tenshi, as wonderful as it was to be a part of, as wonderful as it felt to be the person others turned to in order to feel safe, just wasn't right for him. Especially not after Akairen was exiled, and the tenshi took an absolute nose-dive into further violence. Fortunately for him, it wasn't too long after that event that Kaede took notice. She was still far quieter than normal- he'd seen her around before, the Empress of all Kasaiwari, but she seemed so, so sad up close. He almost said as much before his manners caught up with him. "I am in need of another retainer," she said, softly, "In these dangerous times. I hear you are able to cleanse hostile intent from an area with your brushwork." "You hear correctly, my empress," he replied, head bowed deep in respect, brow knitting together, "A-Are you asking me to be your retainer?" She was. He was relieved, but also immediately saddled with immense crushing guilt. Living the cushy life of a palace retainer took him away from the danger of his job, of his brothers and sisters in arms who every day were now going out without him to their potential deaths. It still sits a little ill with him, though he tries not to show it. Since Kikue does the more physical side of being a retainer and runs the palace security, Tsubaki ends up doing most of the more menial stuff like going through the paperwork Kaede doesn't have time to. At first, that was a truly truly immense amount of work. It boggled his mind that anyone could ever deal with that sheer amount of work. He was relieved when Kaede stepped down, if not just for that reason alone. He sits in on Kaede's meetings if she's busy, and still attends alongside her and Kikue if she isn't busy. He owes Kaede a great deal, and is very loyal to the Tenkubashi family, as one might expect. His primary duty, outside of helping Kaede, is to go around the entire capital renewing seals he has placed around it at strategic points to repel those with ill intent. Any yokai who cross the boundary have the equivalent of a peace spell placed on them. It's not perfect, but it's pretty effective if he says so himself. He also purifies the foreign ships coming into port, which puts him in frequent contact with the Mantarune. He has mixed feelings about that. Tsubaki is a surprisingly reserved person considering his high position and incredible talent, introspective and thoughtful, he rarely speaks before he thinks about it for several moments. He takes great care to appear put together and formal, even if he is technically a kid from the middle of nowhere. His shyness immediately evaporates when there's danger afoot, where he transforms into someone with a far more saucy attitude thinking twenty steps ahead at all times. He's got a voracious attitude for knowledge and if he thinks someone will teach him something new, he has a tendency to pester them relentlessly. Whilst he has his own opinions about just about everything, he does tend to defer to others and only share his own thoughts one on one, alone, where no one else will hear. | ___ |
