━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The stars called to him. For as long as Nicoli could remember, he had always been searching for someone like him. Fallen from the darkness above. Etched forever with the memories of the cosmos on his scales- constellations that wound around his ankles, swirling starmaps covering his neck. Even his wings shone reflective against the sun, as if protesting its glare, longing for the cover of dusk. At night, he faintly glowed.

Of course there was also the matter of his eyes. Dozens of them. Trailing down his sides and piercing through his hide with their pale blue stares and thin black pupils. It was clear to Nicoli, even from such a young age, that he would never belong. Found amidst the glaciers and rivers of ice, his green scales and wings stood out sorely during the day, and his glow reflected off the ice at night, casting such bright reflections that ensured he could never be fully hidden.

The clans he stumbled upon would not permit him entry. Many of them had legends warning them of many-eyed dragons fallen from the stars. With no idea of his birthplace, lineage, or purpose, Nicoli traveled on.

He passed through the miles and mountains of glaciers and ice floes. His paws cracked on hot sand, on molten rocks, on broken earth. He fled craters of rot and shadow. After what seemed like ages of running, he found the forest.

Thick trees arched over him and stars peeked through, a river winding next to him. The grass was rich with clusters of flowers. A river, deep and winding, rustled softly. The waters stirred. Bubbled. A pointed blue snout surfaced, then horns, then pale, milky eyes. The creature stared up at him and blinked.

Nicoli hardly knew what to do. Were they not afraid of him? The other dragon met his gaze and stared. When Nicoli began to move forward, the dragon dipped back under the black water’s surface, and he caught a glimpse of a long mane and raised scales.

He waited, unsure if the dragon would return. And in a couple moments, they did, bearing fish between their teeth, tossing the catch to the riverbank with a series of whirrs and clicks, before vanishing into the depths once more.

After eating his fill, Nicoli realized that this could be the place he’d been looking for. Vast, dense forests, mountains nearby that scraped the heavens, open plains where tall grasses rustled, and a peculiar sense that he was home.

During the day, Nicoli came to meet other members of the clan who came out of the woodworks to welcome him.

At night, he would climb towards the stars. The mountain was jagged and steep, but his wings resisted tears and his claws found footholds. From the summit he could see the swirling patterns of galaxies above. It put him at peace, to know his origin was so close, but still. He longed for a common kinship. In all of his travels, Nicoli had never found another dragon from the stars.

Until. One night when he strained to return to the cosmos, leaping in desperation up towards the home he once knew- and a dragon stepped out from the woods.
