Lore~

Terror shook the planet with every new emperor that crawled up from below the crust of the earth, smashing boulders and tearing up fields until they left nothing but destruction in their wake. It took many armies to bring down beasts so massive and so animalistic in nature. Sometimes, even hundreds of soldiers wouldn’t be enough. From the time he was just a hatchling, Glint always thought of these monsters as legends to scare children. Hell, he even used them in his own stories to frighten his twin sister, Gleam.

Glint had a close relationship with his mother, closer than their other siblings, when their father left the clan for business reasons and never returned home. Glint often thought of himself as the head of the family, being the oldest male, and this egotistical belief was only bolstered by the affirmations from his mother. Alina was a dragon who cared for all of her children, but she also played favorites. Glint was indeed a favorite.

It was this belief and behavior that led to a somewhat narcissistic personality. The male imperial was fully convinced he was the only one who could properly protect his family. And for a long time, he did a great job. Kept encroaching predators away from their nests, kept their lair safe from thieves. Glint thought himself indestructible, a mindset that would soon prove to be his downfall.

A war broke out between two clans that shared the boundaries of the city in which Glint and his family resided. Foolishly, the black and gold imperial rushed to the front lines along with every other volunteer who’d agreed to defend the city. The issue was that these were all adult dragons with some level of combat experience. Glint was an adolescent who’d never even picked up a sword before. But, arrogantly, he did not tell Alina of his intentions and sprinted into the fray as a destructive battle unfolded.

He’d thought he could stomach a war. He thought nothing could frighten him. But the young dragon stood amongst erupting chaos with trembling legs. Clashing metal and screams surrounded him as crimson stained the ground beneath his feet. Frozen by the sheer terror of so much violence when he’d never been exposed to such a scene before, Glint could only stand still with wide yellow eyes taking in the carnage.

Alina, counting her children one by one, had realized very quickly that her eldest son was missing. She frantically searched for him after getting her other little ones to safety outside the city limits, ordering Gleam to keep them safe while she went to find Glint. The younger imperial agreed, staying with her siblings as their mother took to the air above the war raging on below her. Meanwhile, Glint had been dragged down to duck behind some supply crates by an older dragon who seemed rather seasoned on the battlefield.

“Get off the field if you aren’t cut out for it, kid,” he snarled before turning to jump back into the fray. Meanwhile, Glint did not move, cowering behind the crates.

Alina, spotting him, landed behind the stack of crates as well. “Oh, Glint, you’re alive,” her wings came around him to embrace him, but she just as quickly pushed him backwards with a look of anger in her eyes. “What were you thinking!? You could have-” she cut herself off before her voice could crack with a sob. All the while, Glint had hardly responded, the fear in his eyes fading into a wide, blank stare.

Shaking off the anger, Alina’s gaze darted around for a safe way out, where neither of them would be struck by stray arrows or enemy soldiers. She did not get far in her attempt to locate an escape route before a trio of the opposing militants surrounded her and her son, spears down and poised to kill.

“Glint. Fly. Now,” her orders were short, clipped, and final as she bared her fangs in defense, using a wing to block the enemies’ view of her son.

“But- but Mom-” he began, sobering up.

“Now!”

Shakily, Glint flapped his wings and lifted his body into the air. Arrows rained down from above, narrowly missing him as he continued to fly higher to avoid the archers. When he reached the layer of clouds hanging low over the city, Glint started flying back to where the evacuated citizens were gathering. He ran through the terrified refugees, calling for his siblings. All he could think about was the image of his mother ordering him to flee as three large imperials surrounded her.

He smacked into Gleam full force, sending both twins tumbling backwards. “Damn it, Glint!” She cursed, rising shakily to her feet. “Can’t you watch-?” She cut herself off when she noticed the sheer terror in her brother’s eyes. “Glint? What’s wrong? Where’s Mom?”

He shook his head numbly, wide-eyed.

Gleam, mercifully, did not ask any more questions. Instead, she led her brother back to the place where the rest of their siblings were being cared for by members of the city orphanage. Protecting the children whose parents had left them to take part in battle. What these little imperials didn’t know was that now, they were part of that group.

It was hours. Days. Finally the shouting and clanging of swords went silent. By then, many of the refugees had already left to seek a city that hadn’t been ravaged by war. Among them were the dragons of the orphanage, who’d forced Glint and Gleam’s younger siblings to come with them, promising their mother would retrieve them when she returned. They allowed the twins to stay due to their age, but even so, the director recommended against it.

Glint and Gleam braved returning to the city. The destruction and fallout of the war had left their city unrecognizable. Buildings crumbling, billows of smoke from smoldering fires. Bodies littered across blood-stained marble. But among them, Glint and Gleam could not locate their mother. Some of the chests of fallen soldiers still rose and fell, but even among the living, Alina was nowhere to be found. It had been almost a day of searching, and in the wreckage, the twins were on the verge of giving up.

Until they heard something. A sound neither of them has ever been able to describe even when they do brave talking about what came next.

Multiple shrieking roars. So ferocious and animalistic that no Sornieth-bound creature could have made it.

A horrible massive shadow fell over them.

It was Glint who turned first. And the moment he did, he snapped his talons over Gleam’s eyes to shield her from looking.

Glint had never known what an abomination was, but as he looked at that amalgamation of rotting flesh and gaping maws that strung with red saliva, over a dozen heads watching him and waiting for one of the other heads to claim its meal, he knew. Glint kept covering his sister's eyes, then slowly backed away from the emperor.

“When I let go of you, you run, and you don’t look back, understand?” Glint ordered.

Gleam nodded. Obediently, when Glint removed his hand, she took off with tears in her eyes, and her brother followed suit. They were both young and fast, so much so that the twins escaped the wrath of the emperor, who didn’t bother to chase them as it continued to destroy the rest of the city. Leaving nothing but debris and silence in its wake.

Unbeknownst to the fleeing siblings, a force of gaolers specially trained to contain the beasts had already set out to deal with the rise of such a monster. Without this peace of mind, however, all Glint knows is that their mother had to have become part of it... He saw her shining yellow eyes among those beasts before dragging Gleam away. While in their new clan, Glint has taken up a job as a messenger, making use of his speed and stamina, he refuses to return to the Sunbeam Ruins, too afraid that he might once again see a creature like the one that haunts every nightmare that plagues him.
