Their Story

____The water was a part of them, as is all living things. Water is the life that must be fed or to perish is a likely fate. But water is also cruel and fickle, because just as one second it gives life – the next it takes. That is what happened to them, a little dip on a warm summer day. Something they had done a thousand times before, splashing and playing while they cooled off. In an instant the water grabbed their wing and took them home to the depths.

It burned at first. Their lungs were aching, screaming to take in a breath. When they could no longer fight this urge a new burning sensation as their nose and lungs filled. The deeper that they were drug pressure was the next to hurt. Their ears burst and if they could, they would have screamed in pain. It was a moment, a fleeting one, as everything fogged over. The haze set in and the fear and struggle of their wings slowed.

With that they were gone.

Only… they weren’t.

Their eyes slowly crept open, dry and caked. A gasping breath was torn from their lungs. It was too dry; everything was too dry. Looking around the world was fuzzy without the needed moisture. One second the world was too wet and the next everything was cracking. Without hesitation they drug themselves back to the water only to feel the life come back. The pain lessened, the dehydration was gone, they were like a sponge that was coming back to full form in the water.

The water had touched them. And from that point was a part of them. For if they strayed too far from that water, they were surely to die far faster than anyone else. It wasn’t without its benefits, slowly they learned to feel the water as an extension of themselves. Slowly it was easier to control. Slowly there was more that they could do.

They say if you don’t drown, you are a witch, they never said what happened after.
