Her Story

____They found me at sea. Lost and alone. Scared and forgotten. I had been tossed over like I was nothing but excess cargo. I had left my home to join the ship, the pirates, to find a new place for myself. A family. A family that abandoned me.

The anger and betrayal coursed through me. The spite to live. The will to escape. The desire to prove I was stronger. I screamed with every emotion I had inside of me. It tore through me and the waves around me crashed. I thrashed in the water, and it spun around me. My anger. My pain. My disgust. My fear. In an instant it felt like a rubber band snapping from my chest into the world. Into a storm.

The winds drug at my wings, it pulled me from the freezing water. I whipped through the air as the storm threw me along and into the ground. The feeling of land was comforting, and I cried tears of joy. I had made it. And with that warm feeling of happiness the storm was pulled away. The sun beat down onto my back as I tried to scramble away from the water.

I felt frustrated and just as the warmth of the sun came, it lost. As the clouds rolled in my mood only soured. I was beaten and broken; I couldn’t fly on my own after my crash landing. Snow started to fall chilling me, which was one of the most confusing things because snow doesn’t fall in the spring. I felt the winds pick up at my confusion.

A soft claw brought me back. I jumped and lashed at who ever it was. Lightning struck. “Please, traveler you are upsetting the water”. Was all they said. It was eerie as the liquid fell from their mouth like they were made of water.

“Me? How! I crashed here from the water. I haven’t done anything!” I had snapped when I shouldn’t have, and I knew it. Another crack of lightning, far closer this time struck.

“What is your name?” The water dragon asked.

“Lelura.” It was short and terse through my teeth.

“Lelura, my sister, you must breathe. It seems you are a vessel for the winds.” The confusion rippled over my skin. “You look lost and judging by the continued storm you do not understand. I can explain but first you must calm your own inner storm.” I rolled my eyes, there was no reason that I had to follow any sort of orders from the likes of them. “If you keep with that attitude then I will leave you to strike down your own life.” The urgency in their voice caught my attention.

As much as I wanted to continue in the warmth of my anger, I took a moment to rest my thoughts. And as the stranger predicted, the storm lessened. “Thank you, I am Makalapua. I am a water witch. It seems to me that you are a weather witch. I can bring you back to my clan and help you learn to keep that rage in check while I heal you.”

I simply extended my hand as they helped me to my feet to leave.
