Gemma and Jasper never claimed to make their living honestly, and they certainly never strove to teach their children any better. The cracked and arid Shattered Plain is a harsh and unforgiving place to live, and so hatchlings learn how to be of use before they’re dropped as deadweight.
Cheats and swindlers, cons and sneak thieves, these children learn how to manage on their own. Even those few who choose to follow the straight and narrow are fiercely independent, troubled over the idea of owing a favor to another. No matter what profession they end up in, their ready wit and unique morals will always mark them as their mothers’ children.
Danford likes to think he’s a clever sort of fellow. He certainly figured out, quick enough, that if he wanted to have a tidy hoard of his own, a little white lie to his mamas about how much he actually scored on a job didn’t hurt. Furthermore, while he admires the whole thieving routine most of his family prefers, he’s pretty sure he’s come up with something simpler - no one easier to rob than the willing! There are always desperate dragonfolk out there, in the sort of bind that a little extra treasure could help out. And Danford, with his personal hoard, is happy to help out! For a nominal fee, of course. Thankfully, desperate folk tend not to ask too many questions, and they don’t tend to have too many friends when Danford comes looking for payment. That doesn’t mean they always cough it up, and a time or two, Danford’s had to recruit his brother for some creative convincing. Unfortunately, the sort of on-the-go lifestyle his mothers prefer isn’t great for getting drakes to pay up, so he’s looking to settle down somewhere he can grow his investments. He’d just like to help more folks out, that’s all!
