Gemma and Jasper never claimed to make their living honestly, and they certainly never strove to teach their children any better. The cracked and arid Shattered Plain is a harsh and unforgiving place to live, and so hatchlings learn how to be of use before they’re dropped as deadweight.
Cheats and swindlers, cons and sneak thieves, these children learn how to manage on their own. Even those few who choose to follow the straight and narrow are fiercely independent, troubled over the idea of owing a favor to another. No matter what profession they end up in, their ready wit and unique morals will always mark them as their mothers’ children.
Stanton’s an easy-to-please sort of fellow, who takes after his mama Jasper. Point him at a target, let him have a brawl, and he’s fairly happy with his day’s work. Even better if he gets paid. Being as he’s not in possession of too many scruples, there’s a fair few jobs out there that satisfy those requirements. A time or two, he’s assisted his brother in convincing a client that their interest was due quite promptly. Now, he’s not too interested in coming up with schemes himself, but he doesn’t mind a tidy pay packet for doing what he loves. So he’s looking to find a paying position with someone who needs a fellow who knows their way around a fight.
