___
Ice Head of the Primal Emperor of the Wagon Post Resting Stop

______Beware the beast of Ice. Beware her freezing gaze and roar of piercing icicles. Let not her anguish of falling to protect her home be in vain. Remember her. Respect her. But beware.

~

______Oriethyia watched over the small town of Frost Pine Retreat from her usual spot, a beautifully snowy cliffside perch overlooking her beloved home. The comforting lights shone throughout the cozy town, making the hills sparkle and the snow dragons made by the town hatchlings seem almost alive. It was peaceful, way up there, even if the cold winds bit at her whiskers and made her eyes water. She didn't mind. She would watch and she would protect.

______The sound of heavy footsteps alerted her to another presence, but she didn't even need to look to know who was there.

______"I'll come down in a bit, Flurry. I need to keep an eye out." She spoke over her shoulder.

______There was a soft laugh as the guardian settled next to her, his iridescent black scales shimmering in the moonlight. He carefully handed her a sealed container with a spoon on top. Opening it released a heavenly smell alongside a puff of steam, greeting her with a bowl of fish miso soup. Of course Flurry brought her favorite.

______"You're welcome." Flurry preened.

______"And let's be real, we both know that's a lie Thyia. You'll be up here until the wee hours of the morning."

______She gave him an annoyed glare, but there was no heat in it towards her hatchlinghood friend. She knew he was right, but he didn't need to say it.

______"One would almost think you were the Guardian here, not me."

______"Hush, you know it's my duty!"

______"I know, I know, family duty passed down through generations." He rolled his eyes, the long repeated phrase rolling off his tongue.

______"Let me at least keep you company, if just to get Bluster to relax. You know how she is."

______Oriethyia couldn't find it in her to say no.

~

______It started like that night at first. Calm, peaceful, and filled with idle chatter and the occasional laugh. Oriethyia was on her perch with Flurry beside her when her ears pricked to the sound of something approaching. Nothing like she had ever heard before, no. Whatever was coming was big. The footsteps echoed throughout the frozen wasteland, knocking loose snow from the hills and causing a few minor avalanches. She heard shouting from her home below as dragons big and small scrambled to safety. She smelled it far before she saw it.

______It was shambling, stumbling, and the stench of death following it was as strong as if it were right beside her, burning her nostrils. Immediately she stood and spread her wings, but before she could take off, Flurry's desperate call caught her attention over the growing wind.

______"Thyia, no! You can't beat it, you'll be assimilated!" The guardian stared up at his friend with pain in his eyes, claws grabbing a hold of her arm. He knew he was fighting a losing battle, but the fear of what might happen to his closest friend tore at his heart until he felt like he might burst.

______"I have to Flurry!" She turned her head to shout over the wind. "If I don't, I throw away everything I've ever stood for. Now let me go!"

______"By the Icewarden, don't be so stubborn for once! At least let me go with you if you really insist on fighting it!"

______Oriethyia locked eyes with Flurry. Her expression was all the guardian needed to know her answer. "No. Stay here and guide the others to safety."

______She shouldered past him and took off, leaving Flurry to look longingly after her. The guardian's eyes filled with freezing tears as he watched his charge fly towards certain death.

______Oriethyia let out a horrible roar as she approached the abomination, teeth bared even as she realized it was composed of a few faces she recognized. A sob erupted from her throat as she collided with the beast, having not only an obligation to her town, but now to her former companions to win this battle and put them out of their post-mortem misery.

______Teeth tore undead flesh and claws dug in deep, finding holds in rotten muscles and sinew. Despite her efforts, she was just as easily picked up and thrown like a ragdoll, her great bulk destroying buildings that made up her home, scattering terrified citizens running for their lives.

______But she pressed on, even as her life seeped from her wounds. Even as her leg buckled and her wings forgot how to fly. Her vision blurred but every time she closed her eyes, Flurry called out her name. With one last agonizing scream, she fell alongside the ruins of what had once been the town square. Choking as her lungs collapsed, she fought to keep her thoughts straight, hoping that Flurry would protect the residents that were left, that maybe she hadn't truly failed.

______As the abomination dragged itself closer, all she could think about was how pretty the crimson stained snow glimmered in the early morning light. Allowing her eyes to close, Oriethyia could only hope her assimilation was painless.
