Biography
Carter
Carter couldn't recall what happened, but when he awoke, he was laying on a cot in the exalt fortress hall. This was not his clan's lair, but he knew the large-capacity housing style and recognized the gear kit in the dresser beside his bed. The decorations were fairly nice, all things considered, and the dragons around him seemed to be at ease despite their shared fate. His hazy mind could not piece together more than fragments of the disappointment and confusion of the past few days, which presumably had contained his journey to this place. Was his hour of exalt truly upon him? With a history of excellence in arts and crafts and a life full of wonderful connections to his dear friends (particularly his childhood companion Starburst Stuart), he felt that there was too much left in this world for him. Yet here he was.
The guards came into the room to retrieve another pair of trainees, and Carter's heart sank when his name was called. He stood and followed them through the hall alongside a cantankerous yellow Guardian. The guards were quite kind, explaining the history of their clan and voicing their gratitude on behalf of their deity for the adventures he was sure to have on the other side. Carter smiled gently through their words as his heart pounded and his stomach twisted.
The training itself was easy enough, he was paired with a ferocious fighter who capably protected her trainees from the monsters they faced. Carter felt his strength doubling, taking in the greater dragon's lessons as best he could. This was all happening so very quickly.
A guarddragon burst through the Coliseum doors, a frantic shimmering blur of pink trailing behind him.
"Stop! This one's got a waiver!"
The warrior scooped Carter off the fighting floor when the last monster was slain, striding toward the guard at the Coliseum gate.
"CARTER!"
He looked into the distance. As the haze of glitter slowed to a stop behind the guard, he recognized it as his very own best friend, Starburst Stuart! He had missed his companion dearly since his departure to Shadow, and though his letters were always a treat to receive, it was almost unreal to see Stuart in person once again. In this moment, it felt divine.
The shining Snapper was smiling widely, heavy breaths from running all this way still catching in his throat with poorly held-back cries of relief.
"I didn't think we'd make it in time. I'm so glad you're alright!"
Carter tromped gleefully across the grass of the training yards to embrace his friend. He looked back over his shoulder to the Coliseum guards, who granted him full leave to follow Stuart out toward the fortress gate. Apparently, a deal had been made for his freedom between Stuart and the castle's graceful leaders. In awe at the fortune of his timing, and grateful for the kindness of this strange castle's leadership, Carter gladly stepped back into the open world.
At the entrance to the fort, he was introduced to Fruit Snack Freddy and Leif, both members of Stuart's new clan. He was struck by the bold berry aura of Freddy's slime, and the aged-oak grace of Lief's gentle, prudent voice. They too, were enraptured by this gentleman who they'd come so far to help rescue. Stuart's fellow clan leaders had quickly approved the emergency mission the preceding evening, and in very short order, the three dragons had ventured North to try to save Carter's life. And there was no shortage of life in this vibrant, distinguished fellow. With a bulky blue form and a gleaming aura of radiance, Carter was a walking dichotomy, a stunningly bizarre gentleman to look at. Though Leif had initially joined them to help the recently abandoned Carter to seek a new home clan through the Second Story Rescue, it became readily apparent that he was Morningstar material.
By the time they crested the peak of the topmost crags to reach DECEMBERUNDERGROUND, they'd shared devious laughter, grim tales of woe, and many marshmallows over the previous nights' campfires. Carter was introduced to the rest of the clan in a welcoming reception feast; he was amazed at the bounty of these desolate lands. He was also told of the glory of Morningstar, and was particularly struck by the description of His call, which matched identically to Carter's memory of the warmth and fierce inner vitality he'd felt upon his rescue. He shared tales of his many feats in arts and crafts, with Stuart nudging him out of timidness and vouching for his greatness. By the evening's end, the clan were all glad to offer him a place among their ranks, impressed by his strange, lovable form and his sturdy, humble grace.
One of the clan's post-mission reflections was on leadership structure: it had become apparent in the mad dash to create the rescue party that Morningstar lacked a dragon responsible specifically for the clan's funds. Though they'd cobbled together the coin to arrange Carter's release, the lack of a treasurer was embarrassingly apparent. Thus, with a leaderly, steady-minded, and cool-vibed new brother in their midst, it became clear why Morningstar had brought them this mission, and aided in its success. They offered Carter the position, and he accepted with pride.
Though new in his role, he is now working very diligently on the clan's new budget, balancing the needs for aesthetics, lavish feasts, evil plans, vile experiments, art supplies, and other miscellaneous goods.
