Kendall

The dragon that often sits alone, staring into the sunset, is Kendall. He is the founder of the clan, our very first leader, and one of the most respected dragons here. His past is plagued with heartbreak: after founding the clan, his partner Lucy disappeared for years. Soon after, some of his offspring passed away. When they grew up, Kendall’s children began leaving their father behind, tired of remaining in one place. Hardly any of Kendall’s relationships lasted; the only one remaining is his son Nico.

Kendall is gentle, sensitive and kind. He leads by action, not by words, for he isn’t one to speak or coerce. If the clan were likened to a group of Phytocats marching through the woods, he would be at the helm, not as the leader, but as someone who lights the way for the rest of us. Under his leadership and care, the clan blossomed and flourished to become the tightly-knit family it is today. None of this would have happened if Kendall wasn’t the dragon leading the clan.

But even great leaders grow tired and weary, and Kendall is no longer the one in charge, having left that position to his son Nico. Kendall prefers to spend his days now watching over the clan and living in peace, enjoying the sounds and sights he hasn’t been able to in his youth. Together with his familiar named Wisp, Kendall relishes nature and quiet, spending time mulling over his own thoughts. He can often be found by himself in a quiet corner, his head tilted slightly and his eyes closed, fully attuned to the world around him.

His sweet demeanor and quiet aura hide a thoughtful maturity, the same maturity he used to guide our clan through the toughest of times. But every dragon knows that despite Kendall’s seeming independence, his heart is secretly lonely. Kendall has been through loss and grief, and those types of wounds never quite heal. As sensitive as he is to others, he is also sensitive to what others think of him; even more so after experiencing the departure of others from his life. Silent but hopelessly loving, Kendall is an incomplete soul, still waiting for someone to stay by his side.

When the wind blows by, it carries the tune of songbirds. Kendall’s plaintive voice blends in with the chittering, his words soft and longing, his voice woeful and nostalgic. After he is done with his song, he will stare into the sky with those milky eyes and smile sadly like a songbird that knows it has come to the end of its song. On some days, Kendall sings for hours. On some days, Kendall doesn’t sing at all. But whenever he sings, his voice carries like petals through the air, graceful and lilting, before they land somewhere and are forgotten.

Kendall’s fear is exactly that: that he will be forgotten, cast aside, unwanted. He does not concern himself with riches or power. He only seeks companionship and fulfillment. And so he continues to sing, his voice rising in a crescendo, over the hills and through the lands to spread the message of the loneliest songbird in the world.
