MERSAILLES
The Lord Regent

“I am deeply sorry, but I have no choice but to deny your request. Peace be with you in the dark.”

Before the City of Dusk, Mersailles made his living playing mercenary lord on the fringes of the Scarred Wasteland. Despite his cold and dictatorial style of leadership, those who served under him followed him selflessly. Whether it was the ludicrous jobs he took or the disciplined organization varied from sellsword to sellsword, but all agreed that Mersailles was a force to be reckoned with.

The exact details of his departure from Plague territory are hazy–Mersailles has claimed conflicting politics, though Aislin’s story goes that they had simply tired of the mercenary lifestyle. None know what exactly drove him to abandon his position and flee to the Tangled Wood, but supposedly Aislin came into his life around this time and was involved in his abrupt exit. Though their relationship is young, they work incredibly well together both in and out of combat situations, and if not strictly loving, the two Imperials hold great respect for one another.

Arriving during the first stages of Arethusa’s great rebuild effort, Mersailles was quick to offer the Twilit Lady his expertise in command and combat in warding off the continued assaults of the felons in the slums. Under his strict and unrelenting guidance, the rate of attacks was almost completely reduced within his first week as Knight Commander. As the City developed into the commercial hub it is today, Mersailles’s continued patrols and creation of the Palace Knights had the city’s new residents singing his praise.

Those same songs quickly turned venomous, however, when the Imperial exchanged the title of Commander for that of Lord and relocated to the Noble Quarter. Many accused him of abandoning the commonwealth, but his first week as a noble did little to change city life–the systems he had put in place held up perfectly without him and what few criminals still lurked in the slums were unable to regain their former foothold over the city, so the popularity of deriding Lord Mersailles diminished considerably.

His promotion to Lord Regent came as an even bigger surprise than his resignation as Knight Commander; never having dabbled much in court politics, Mersailles had no supporters among his peers and many began to accuse Arethusa of favoritism. How the new Lord Regent would govern the city did not remain a mystery for long: Drawing on his background in leadership, Mersailles handled all matters sternly and ruthlessly, be they the appeal of prince or peasant. With Arethusa’s disappearance, none had the power to contest his degrees, though Miekhe has proven to have some sway over the Lord Regent’s decisions.

Still, Mersailles’s cold regard and disinclination towards kindness has turned much of the nobility and the proletariat against him in spite of the good he continues to do for the city as a whole. Many tell tales of treachery behind closed doors; the Lord Regent’s list of crimes grows longer and more fictitious by the day, and the people tread warily, in fear of what he must be planning.
