Narcissus

he turned to fire magic as a means to stop him from looking at himself. once, when he was a child, he discovered his own reflection in a clear pool of water, and was unable to look away. he was only saved from a slow and agonizing death by the numerous hands of his loved ones pulling him away, breaking the stillness of the water so his reflection distorted and broke. afterwards, he lingered on the cusp of madness. for years. he eventually found that if one puts their face close enough to an intense heat, they are forced to close their eyes. so he took up magic; not out of a curiosity, but of a desperate crushing need. he called flames until they burned paths along his body and boiled the swamps he called his home, afraid that the murky black water beneath might someday betray him.
