Biography

PRUTHYRA
[ legend • explorer ]

voyager of the icefields | energetic, clever, haughty

Pruthyra was born to the surface, beyond the days of obelisks first emerging to the earth. Her ancestry was but a legend to her: a home in a story, but was like a waning campfire to keep her warm at night. Her father had relocated among the Icefields like many dragons seeking a place to bury their sins and start anew; it had been just the two of them for as long as she could recall, a family of two moving between cities from the time she was a hatchling. They shed their identities like cloaks no matter where they went. In the Windswept Plateau she was Orlina the shy girl who scarcely talked, and in Starfall Isles she was Adelaide the clever who'd forgotten her memory. When they came to the Icefields, Pruthyra begged her father that she was old enough to pick her own name this time. He grumblingly agreed, and she settled upon Pruthyra, though was forced to take the story that she was a sickly young thing and had to remain inside in bed most of the time. She would stay away from the windows but make blanket forts and create stories with her straw dolls while her father was away working, and when he would come home she'd help him gut fish and cook and they'd pass the evening in silence. It was never meant to be permanent. Once they wore out their welcome here, he said, they'd travel onwards, perhaps back to the Plateau to stay again with their family friend.

But it, of course, never happened. For the Icewarden and his frost-weathered followers did not take kindly to criminal strangers, and one day Pruthyra's father never returned home. She obediently waited in her bed and stayed out of sight for three days, until she'd eaten through everything in the ice chest and began to worry. So she slipped from their cabin and ventured deeper into town (keeping up a very convincing cough) and asked the townspeople if they'd seen her father. They all exchanged looks: he had been taken to the Fortress of Ends, the frigid prison of the Icewarden's claws, from where no one ever returned.

Fiercely independent and too convinced of her own strength, Pruthyra abandoned that town in the tundra and set off further south. She didn't get far. The snow bit into her feet and she didn't know how to feed herself, gnawing on roots and rocks just to keep her stomach full. The wind grew fiercer as she neared the mountain range and there was no clear path ahead. All knew to pass the crags one must sail around: but Pruthyra had never been told, and so weak and tired she would have died in the foothills was she not found by an ice fishing crew. They bundled her up despite her protests and fed her scraps of fish as they rushed her to the coast. By the time they arrived in the port city, Pruthyra was fading. There was nothing for healers to give her — nothing that any mortal medicine could do. But word of a young obelisk this far south spread fast, and Pruthyra received a peculiar visitor at her bedside. He was an obelisk of pure slick darkness with eyes that seemed to flame. Her spirit's far too faded, he said, his words floating in the haziness of her consciousness. It should have been the end, but instead, the man restored her: filled her with the most intense heat she'd ever experienced, melting away her fur into the oil the other obelisk bore. She'd been granted a gift she never asked for, and recovered.

Despite her haughty promises that she'd run away again to find her father once she felt well enough, Pruthyra remained in the coastal city beneath the wing of the primal obelisk, who became her surrogate father. Her raised her among the ships and with the true legend of obelisks: their connection to the Earthshaker, created as sentinels where the goddess could not be. Pruthyra bonded with the sailors who passed through the icy waters, but one caught her attention in particular: the small ship manned by a clever fae and a dewy-eyed guardian, together seeking to uncover the mysteries of Sorneith. Pruthyra had found her calling and bid farewell to her new hometown. Together the three of them set sail: across whatever tides their vessel could touch, though Pruthyra has never completely forgotten her biological father, locked away somewhere unknown.
