Biography

Zariel
The Shrieker
Borderguard

"Come now, it isn't cruelty after they're dead. I put such time into getting the displays just right too."

A feisty ball of feathers and claws, Zariel was left by Euryale's lair presumably for adoption. Far more energetic than any of the other hatchlings, Zariel was the tiny terror of the lair: chasing small lizards without heed of safety or boundaries, biting his siblings' ankles to start tussles, divebombing the adults of the lair and playing with far too many dead things. Senta, Coronar and Zariel were often seen in a rolling ball of claws and screeches, the small skydancer more than keeping up with the mirrors.

Zariel and Raziel are the two big reasons no one comes to visit clan Mediasolis unless they have to. Zariel enjoys serving as Raziel's scout on her "borrowing" adventures, screeching hell murder if anyone approaches. Even as an adult, there's a level of contained wildness about him, detectable even after all Euryale's lessons on when that energy is appropriate. It surprised no one when the two began denning together, and they love each other with the same ferocity.

Where and how he picked up the art of dissection baffles clan mate and neighbor alike when they run across any of the delicately flayed corpses pinned along the clan's borders. Deities know he could probably make a good doctor if he had any interest. He isn't the one to kill them usually, in part because of his breed; Raziel is more than happy to dispatch the aggressive monsters that encounter the clan. Peeling apart the pelt from a beast is also the only time anyone has seen him sit utterly still.

They've turned into an unholy trio. Ominously quiet Enishi has joined the border guards and helps them rain lightning bolts on unwanted intruders, as well as turn all his bones into a badge of the borderguard. Zariel's energy-sensing abilities and the new arcwards mean most potential intruders are met by three pairs of glowing eyes in the trees.

As a member of the borderguard, he is one of the first to meet Time, when she and her partner flee to his clan. He is suspicious, naturally, but he catches her appreciating one of his scarecrows and they end up talking. Not long after, she offers him an array of dark beauty moths and caterpillars if he will make her matching bone adornments for her and her partner. He refuses the payment, of course. For her, he will make them for free.

Zariel and Enishi sit stacked on top of Raziel, who is sunning them all on one of the high pillars. But his pupil-less eyes are narrowed at the Hewn City and Enishi notices, running gentle claws down his antenna to get his attention.
"What is wrong." He asks, outer headcrests ticking back and forth to express the questioning tone he cannot make. Zariel makes a subsonic rumble of discontent.
"Did anyone actually see Senta off to the Lightweaver?"
The other two are silent, Raziel shifting her balance.
"No. I did not see her go. Did Lamorai not see her off." The fae inquires.

He screams his throat hoarse when Shirubake returns with Raziel's body, so loud that the skydancer puts her down just to get away. Once alone, he keens and shrieks at each newly-discovered wound, pulling flayed skin back over deep gashes. He will turn whoever did this into a scarecrow. His noises die down when Time and Ulcifet arrive, whining as the blood flows back into her body. Ulcifet looks back at him fearfully as he follows them back to the clan, eyes empty behind the birdskull headdress. He sits next to her once she's laid in the tunnels, still without a word issuing from his mouth.

He hates to admit it, but his mate is probably right. She's much stronger now than she was before the Shadow assault and now he's the one lagging behind. He knows society would expect him to be a mage, but magic is so imprecise through when compared to time spent with his claws. Live creatures just won't hold still long enough for him to gather a bolt and shoot it. Mirinae understands. She is a Demon Sister, like his mate. The Sisters understand that ferocity is not a matter of size.
