Biography

lore:
Falere was separated from her home at a young age. Lost, she wandered alone for a long time, occasionally meeting a dragon along the way. When she came across a proper clan, she threw herself into the arms of the first dragon she saw. Nisia became her rock, her first taste of stability in an ever changing world. And after finding something so beautiful, she could never let go, and never would. Eventually they settled down together and had kids. Imagine the young couple's shock to discover they were actually related! The inherent behavior of the world's magic should have prevented such a union, but nothing could stand in the way of their love.

Falere's offspring suffer a rare genetic condition that is best known for the possibility of injuring or fatally wounding the afflicted's mate after a successful or unsuccessful breeding. Afflicted dragons' magic clashes, and is often incompatible, with the magic of other dragons. Their magic is an overpowering force that can lead to complications when attempting combination magic use with a partner, such as paired attacks, thought-shares, and breeding. This list is not all-inclusive. These complications extend to partners who also have the condition - this means that two dragons with the condition may injure themselves and/or each other when attempting combination magic. This condition is known to cause problems with addiction. See more below.

In ancient cultures, these dragons have been hailed as gods of destruction, rivaling the Eleven themselves.
[insert more about the history/mythology of the condition]

Not all dragons seem to inherit the condition at first, but it may not be detected until well into adulthood if so. Many forms of the condition are mild - the afflicted's mate may experience headaches, become ill after breeding and incapable of caring for the eggs, or may experience a long-term magic related illness and eventually recover. Other forms are more severe, causing the afflicted's mate to lose all magical ability, become permanently physically injured, or suffer fatal injury. Many severe cases may appear to be only mild at first - the severity only becoming apparent upon the first attempt to breed.

The mild cases may have regular or lessened fertility. The more severe cases are not typically capable of successful reproduction. In the few studied cases of an afflicted dragon with the severe variant reproducing, the offspring have all been healthy and do not have the condition. However, current research has been unable to determine if these healthy offspring are carriers of the condition.

Afflicted dragons, especially in the more severe cases, may experience a sense of euphoria when overpowering another dragon's magic accidentally or intentionally. This euphoric feeling can be addictive to dragons with this condition. Without help and a stable support group, it often drives them to actively seek out and attempt combination magic activities to experience that "rush" again. As an afflicted dragon that experiences euphoric reactions continues to attempt combination magic, their overpowering magic grows - and they become smarter, stronger, and deadlier. This leads any partners to experience more severe injuries more often. Addicted dragons also require progressively stronger combination magic activities to experience this euphoria, often attempting advanced magic that would injure a partner even without the condition.

It is easy to see how a mild case can quickly turn severe. Mildly afflicted dragons who experience euphoric reactions twice in a row or three times total should be treated as severe cases. In historic literature, there are between 11 and 23 potential cases of severely addicted afflicted dragons injuring others with regular magic, as if they had been using combination magic. In recent times, only one afflicted dragon suffering from severe long-term addiction is known to have done this.

For mild cases or carriers, the afflicted should disclose the condition to their potential partners. When breeding, the pair should set a date to breed and plan for the mate to become ill immediately after breeding, for a week up to even a year. A support structure for the pair should be formed - they often require assistance in caring for both the eggs and hatchlings, and the injured mate. Other forms of combination magic should be avoided completely before breeding up until after the mate has recovered. Afflicted dragons and their mates are encouraged to speak with their clan's medics, healers, or doctors before setting a breeding date - depending on the afflicted's projected fertility, a low dose magic suppressant may be prescribed to reduce the chances of injuring the mate. Magic suppressants may reduce fertility, among other effects, and should only be taken under the guidance of a clan's health official.

For severe cases, combination magic is actively discouraged. Attempting to breed is never recommended, and any attempt is likely to be unsuccessful anyway. These dragons are urged to practice any magic when at a distance from others to prevent accidental combined magic usage. Strong magic suppressants may be prescribed - or even forced, depending clan laws. Severe cases are more likely to experience, or may already have experienced, euphoria upon injuring a partner. This leads to a higher chance of addiction.

As long as proper precautions are taken, the vast majority of mild cases remain mild. Afflicted dragons can experience a normal life with average life expectancy. Dragons with severe cases can live close to normal lives as well, with average or slightly below average (due to magic suppressants) lifespans. Afflicted dragons who manage their condition well are not at risk of harming themselves or those around them. Dragons with this condition who become addicted for a time may pose a danger to others, but they return to having little to no risk after recovering.

Dragons with this condition who succumb to addiction and do not express desire to recover are extraordinarily dangerous. They fall in love with their destructive lifestyles and will do anything to continue it, leaving many dead in their wake. They are often extremely powerful, highly manipulative, and exceptional at lying and persuasion. These dragons are past the point of no return - they are highly addicted, extremely powerful, and impossible to treat. The only prescription for a dragon this far gone is death.

If you have a descendant of this bloodline with linked lore, let me know! I will add your dragon and a small blurb to a list of all known afflicted/carriers of the condition (location of list to be determined - possibly in Falere's bio).
If you have a dragon with the same ancestor appearing twice in their family tree within 5 generations (for example; infertile dragons, and Ignis^2 from Peyp's hatchery) and want to refer to my lore, you're free to as well! Let me know, and I'll add your dragon and a small blurb to a separate, similar list for unrelated afflicted/carriers.
