Annual Flameforger's Fire Subspecies Raffle (2021)
Subspecies: Magmarunners
Lore written by gn0me.
One of the more recent subspecies discoveries in Sornieth, Magmarunners were first observed at Magmablood Rebuke, the youngest geological feature to have appeared on Sornieth’s surface.
They are the first Fire sub-species seen to not just tolerate the inhospitable magma flows for periods, but to reside within them seemingly full-time.
Often seen dancing and diving out of the fumerole chimneys as the youngest of Sornieth geological features arose, their name stems from the discovery that they use underground magma routes emanating out from the Great Furnace to transit underground to other locations within the Great Furnace’s root like reach. It is not known whether magmarunners aid in channeling and creating these paths below the land or merely surf them, but it is a delight to see the hatchlings sliding down the lava cones, and the molten trails they leave behind them as they slow to their inevitable halt makes one wonder...
From Magmablood Rebuke they transit back and forth through underground lava channels to the mainland, where lava continuously pours into the sea at Blacksand Annex. Some witnesses even claim to have seen magmarunners conveying portions of the Annex’s soft fluid clay to Magmablood Rebuke, quickening its formation.
From Blacksand Annex on the mainland, easy passage is made throughout Flamecaller’s realm, utilising myriad lava flows across the region, the most visible of which can be seen flowing eastwards from the Great Furnace, aptly named the Molten Scar.
Magmarunners are ideally adapted to prosper from the multitude of rare and precious metals that appear here due to extreme heat, tectonic breakups and collisions, able to locate and remove the majority of them before the multitude of above ground species can even become aware of their exposure.
(It is not known exactly where they store these precious finds, but it can be deduced that they are safely out of reach of most other species.)
Further east at the more hospitable edge of the flow a steady food supply is found, the magmarunners able to snap up such delicacies as edible salamanders and darting fireflies, leaping from their camouflage of lava to snap up their unwary prey.
