Biography

"The Fae in front of you growls slightly as you hand it your broken mechanical toy. He studies it darkly for a moment and fiddles with it before handing it back. You pay quickly and flee, the dark energy around the stall not disappearing even when a more friendly looking Fae appears to scold the tinkerer"

PERSONALITY & QUIRKS

When one interacts with this vampire they get the impression of a spontaneous and possibly insane creature that has little tolerance for other beings. All of this is Mordecai’s way of avoiding other beings as much as he can. Mordecai prefers solitude and usually is forced by Catalina to interact with others. The years in Lonewood have only increased Mordecai’s preference for solitude, though he does now prefer to have a working abomination in the same room when he is alone.
As for Mordecai’s personality there isn’t much to note. He is a very practical and logical dragon that doesn’t have much in the way of emotions or feelings. This allows Mordecai to be unflinching when dealing with bodies or Catalina’s morbid games. He has no qualms obeying his mate’s drastic commands and feels no attachment to what he creates. When talking about or to someone Mordecai is blunt and brutal with his assessment, as well as being unseemly honest. Honesty is the one trait of his that Catalina finds annoying but she finds his blunt words more amusing.

ABOUT

History
Mordecai was born into a small family of purebred vampires that lived in the shadows of the Shifting Expanse. His family hid themselves in a series of intricate caves that formed to resemble the inside of a large manor. As the second son of his family Mordecai was forced to learn the same things as his older brother, but he didn’t get the same high treatment nor high expectations. Mordecai never minded this though as being allowed to hide in the shadows was much more favorable to him. He had more freetime and leniency, in which much of was spent in his private rooms.
Mordecai’s favorite instructor was his uncle Setham. Setham was a master in mechanical engineering and was happy to help Mordecai learn the craft. To both of their delights Mordecai had a natural talent for finding perfect parts and putting them together to craft intricate machines. Mordecai’s true talent though was crafting golems and robots that could befuddle the best engineers, even his uncle. It became a hobby for him to attempt to come up with better robots and golems every chance he got. For years Mordecai spent much of his freetime learning what he could under Setham or crafting golems before his uncle’s untimely demise. When this happened Mordecai spent months in complete isolation to grieve.
After Setham died Mordecai became lost. His uncle had been his only true friend and his family didn’t take much of a liking to him. Mordecai spent months grieving without a purpose, until he found a new point of interest. The book had been tucked into a forgotten box in his family’s storage until Mordecai had dug it out. This book described the dangerous creation of living abominations which Mordecai found intriguing. Following its instructions he experimented with parts of small animals to create his first abominations. The first abominations were uncontrolled and had to be put down but Mordecai was undeterred. He spent hours experimenting alone in his rooms to create obedient and controllable abominations. Once this was achieved Mordecai moved onto trying to make bigger abominations or ones that had a particularly strong trait. Eventually Mordecai realized that some of his abominations could use magic depending on a part used and started experimenting on what exactly his abominations could do in the field of magic. His family eventually noticed these experiments but didn’t try putting a stop to it. This alone was most likely a mistake, even if it didn’t turn into one until another vampire came into play.
When his family married Mordecai to Catalina he didn’t particularly care. As long as it didn’t interfere with his experiments, his family could do as they willed. Catalina didn’t seem too interested in Mordecai anyways, at least not at first. He still spent his long hours in isolation other than his abominations and only interacted with his mate when he had to. Catalina soon became bored though and started showing interest in Mordecai’s abominations. When she started asking questions about them and even complimenting the work, Mordecai was flattered. Never before had anyone else shown interest in his work and it surprised Mordecai that the uptight seeming female vampire would. This caused Mordecai to delightly allow Catalina to participate in his experiments, even allowing her to add her own touches. These added enchantments from Catalina improved Mordecai’s abominations in unexpected ways. The raised strength or magical ability was a point of focus between the pair. Together they experimented to improve the abominations into perfect machines and servants.
Taking over his seethe wasn’t ever something Mordecai was interested in. It was the appeal in experimenting with vampire parts that convinced him to help Catalina. Afterall, what was the harm in sacrificing those he did not care about to further his studies? The continued conquest for power afterwards didn’t contain any interest to Mordecai except for the fact he got more parts to experiment with. He did act as Catalina’s second-in-command, a position he fulfilled surprisingly well due to ruthless execution of orders and a newly discovered talent for planning. Under his mate’s conquest though Mordecai’s name became a point of fear around Sornieth for those who had no wish to somehow be used in his abominations.
The downfall of Catalina and Mordecai was due to Catalina’s overwhelming quest for power. The pair had overlooked the restlessness and disloyalty of their own seethe under the belief that the vampires were too afraid of them to rebel. This weakness was exploited by dragon clans that allied briefly with the vampires to take down Catalina and Mordecai. They were however unable to kill either of them due to Catalina binding them in a way that would cause their deaths to kill the vampires under their control, as well as animating several abominations that the pair had deemed too dangerous to use. The result was Catalina and Mordecai being locked up in an old prison that was believed to be inescapable based on how many impossible beings had stayed locked up inside of it.
If the dragons that locked up Mordecai and Catalina hadn’t put them in the same cell then Mordecai would’ve more than likely refused to follow his mate anymore. As it was the moment he questioned his support of Catalina she was quick to dispel any notion of disloyalty. Instead during those years Catalina took advantage of the solitude to convince Mordecai to blindly follow her rule and mold him into an almost perfect follower. He still occasionally questioned her but she dismissed it in favor of it making him into a better second-in-command. It would be hundreds of years before the pair escaped Lonewood. Despite Catalina’s skill in magic, Lonewood’s protections were too strong to allow escape. It was only when the Sanctuary rediscovered Lonewood did the enchantments weaken enough for Catalina to unravel them long enough for the vampire pair to escape.
Currently
The vampire pair didn’t travel far from Lonewood and joined the unsuspecting Sanctuary. They learned from their previous conquest for power and their years in Lonewood that they would live better in the shadows. In doing so the pair amassed a small amount of vampires and thralls to once again form their own small seethe. While Catalina focused on ensuring loyalty of the seethe, Mordecai focused on the recreation of abominations and servants. Under his mate’s iron rule though he was forced to tread more carefully and stick to the shadows he was so familiar with. Instead of openly killing creatures and dragons for new parts Mordecai was resolved to pick his targets.
The first of these targets was a dying Mirror by the name of Kakza. The young Mirror had a fatal disease that was slowly killing him. Taking a page out of Catalina’s book, Mordecai approached Kakza with an offer. Mordecai would save Kakza in return for the Mirror’s undying loyalty. Too sick to care Kakza took the offer willingly and Mordecai turned him into a living abomination and servant. He replaced Kakza’s shriveled wings with ones he refused to give the origins of. Kakza’s diseased scales were replaced with those of another, giving him a mottled look. Finally Mordecai improved him with a hardened exoskeleton of sorts and had Catalina enchant the final result with heightened strength and complete loyalty to the vampire pair. This would not be the last of Mordecai’s abominations, but it would be one of his strongest ones.
The only reason Mordecai has a job is because Catalina refuses to allow any of her seethe to be unemployed. Currently Mordecai works as a tinkerer, fixing small machines for a bit of treasure. When he isn’t fixing something Mordecai is back in his lab experimenting with living servants and abominations.
Mordecai has no interest in hatchlings and doesn’t argue when Catalina takes it upon herself to be the sole caretaker of them. He does enjoy teaching those that want to or show talent in creating living servants, as a way to pass on the knowledge once he finally moves on.

FAMILIAR BACKGROUND/PERSONALITY

One of Mordecai's original creations was a Nochnyr. At least, it was the reconstruction of one based off of the instructions of his book. The original Nochnyr was destroyed when Mordecai was imprisoned in Lonewood but he later recreated one after escaping. This Nochnyr goes by the name of Scraps and is perhaps the most friendly of Mordecai's creations.

SKILLS & HOBBIES

Mordecai's skills are the basis of an engineer's. He knows the ins and outs of anything mechanical or otherwise, but specializes in robots and living machines. His abominations and servants are both part organic and part mechanical pieces.
Other than constant experimenting to further his knowledge of mechanics, Mordecai doesn't have many other hobbies. He does occasionally enjoy joining Catalina on some of her more dangerous hunts to give himself some exercise. While she prefers to hunt swift prey Mordecai finds delight in hunting dangerous prey such as Featherback Boars (His favorite hunt/meal).
