_____The room smells of paper and ink and the slight acidity of magic, due to the spelled candles being the only source of light. You couldn't have regular fire in here, Mother's grace, not with the delicate books and parchment that line every wall in packed rows, and any sunlight that could manage to pierce through the boughs of the Lair's towering tree would undoubtedly damage the spines of these tomes. So the library is a dark place, though not unwelcoming. The cushions are soft, the tables sturdy, the nooks comfortably tight. The perfect place to take your own candle and lose yourself in the tales held within.

_____There are odd, unmoving shapes in the near-pitch, lumpy and undefined, but for one. A dragon sits at one of these tables, head buried in a book before her. Her wide, black eyes almost seem to glitter in the candlelight, roving quickly over page after page, turning them eagerly but with gentle care. She doesn't see you come in, doesn't seem able to notice anything beyond the next line of her book. Maybe you should say something? But your voice catches in your throat.

_____Next to her, an uneven lump uncurls itself into a sphinx, golden fur and feathers cast in an odd sheen by the candle. She regards you cooly, impassive, before turning to her companion.

_____"What comes and goes, can be held but not kept, and is only yours at home?" asks the sphinx in a richly smooth voice.

_____The dragon hums, then says, "A guest." She blinks for what seems like the first time in ages. "What? Oh! We have a patron!" The smile she gives you is delighted, welcoming -- a little bit too wide. A little bit unnerving.

_____The sphinx smirks and crosses her paws. Her feathery tail sweeps back and forth, dangerously close to disturbing a pile of scrolls. You take a step back as the dragon finishes marking her place and bounds over exuberantly. Suddenly, you're being pulled further into the dark interior by the strangely solid grip on your arm. The shadows start to envelop you. Hopefully, the book you're looking for is nearby.
