A CHANCE MEETING
Lilliandil lounged by the riverside, stretching her neck down to the water to take large gulps of the cool, refreshing liquid. A pile of freshly dispatched prey sat next to her-- the hard-earned rewards of an early morning hunt. Like her mother, Lilliandil possessed keen senses, which made her an excellent huntress. The Wildclaw enjoyed the early mornings and the challenge of catching prey, but her favorite part of the day was visiting the river afterwards, swimming in the cool waters while frogs croaked on the banks and birds chirped overhead.

She took one last gulp of water and was just rising to head back to her clan, when she caught a peculiar scent on the breeze. She stiffened. She was not alone.

It was the smell of a dragon, but she did not recognize it as one of her own clan members. Whirling around to face the source of the scent, Lilliandil took a fighting stance, ready to defend her hard-earned kill if need be. As the unknown dragon approached, however, Lilliandil relaxed a bit. Whoever it was was making quite a racket moving through the understory, and was clearly oblivious to her presence. From that alone, Lillinadil knew they were harmless and excitement dissipated the adrenaline in her veins. She had never met a dragon outside of her own clan before.

When Caspian finally emerged from the thick brush onto the riverbank, he hardly noticed the female Wildclaw staring at him earnestly. He was too busy picking twigs and leaves from his mane and scales, muttering to himself about “stupid plants.” He nearly jumped out of his skin when Lilliandil cleared her throat to announce her presence, but when his eyes snapped up to meet hers, Caspian forgot his disheveled appearance. A female Wildclaw stood before him, claws stained with blood, a pile of dead prey at her feet. Caspian felt his knees go weak and took a step backwards, raising his front talons in a gesture of surrender.

Just as nervous, but out of shyness rather than fear, Lilliandil hastily stuttered out a greeting, reassuring the male that she meant him no harm and hadn’t intended to startle him. Caspian relaxed a little and let out a nervous chuckle, introducing himself but not venturing nearer to the female, his eyes darting around for an emergency exit route just in case. But despite his initial fear, he couldn’t help but stare at the female, for she was undeniably stunning. Her turquoise scales shimmered with water from the river, highlighting the powerful muscles that rippled beneath them.

Realizing he’d been gawking, Caspian apologized, blushing slightly. For a minute, an awkward silence fell between the two of them until Lilliandil blurted out an invitation to swim. Jumping at the opportunity to do anything but stand there uncomfortably, Caspian nodded fiercely and joined her in the cool water. They talked more casually as they swam, and before long, were laughing at their own initial nervousness. When Lilliandil finally left to take her not-so-fresh prey back to her clan, Caspian summoned his courage and asked if he could meet the female again. Lilliandil smiled widely, butterflies fluttering in her chest, and eagerly promised to return the next day.
