Backstory

Silenziosa was found in Virulent’s earliest days, bleeding out in the Boneyard with his tongue nowhere in sight. They managed to get him back to the makeshift layer and Naomi, who soon became their head medic, stopped the bleeding.

As he was still a hatchling, only a few hours old, he was placed in the nursery to huddle with a Guardian and a Tundra. He grew up, learning how to fight and spending no time at all learning how to communicate via sign language or writing. As soon as she could lay eggs he and Rotmiser became mates.

They had many hatchlings together - seventeen in fact - and only four of them are still alive. Not like they tried to contact them or anything, they knew by the Deity’s messengers coming with news of their deaths. With every clutch came a new wave of wax-sealed scrolls, and Rotmiser continued to grow sadder.

After their sixth clutch hatched, and Siobahn paid a visit to her, Rotmiser vanished alongside them. Silenziosa and a patrol managed to track them down to the Wyrmwound, which is where she threw herself in with the hatchlings still clinging to her back.

He couldn’t tell her to stop. He couldn’t beg her to come back. He couldn’t do anything but bellow his ragged screams. Damaris, the old head ambassador, waded into the Wyrmwound and managed to rescue one hatchling before Rotmiser’s legs buckled and sent her into the acid.

The Skydancer was crippled, but his daughter was unharmed until a week later when the Arcanist’s and Icewarden’s troops came to their doorstep. Atria was found dead atop of the bone wall with a score of Centaur arrows in her.

Silenziosa simply watched as the clan spiraled out of control. Siobahn took on the role that his mate had deserted as clan Priestess, Mallon continued to beg him to run away, and dragons joined the clan only to be killed a week later.

Then Aramis said that they were going to flee the Plaguelands. They razed the clan’s camp to the ground, and headed north. He was in the first party, which was attacked by a Beastclan ambush beside Dragonhome’s cliffs. Mallon was the first to fall, then he cut the ropes that bound the crates of supplies to him.

He fled.

--

He knew what he did was cowardly.

He knew what he did was wrong.

He didn’t care.

Silenziosa ducked into the Tangled Woods, looking back over his shoulder every so often to make sure nobody followed him.

He was tired. There were centaur arrows in his side and Mallon’s last screams echoing in his head and he was so very, very tired. The Ridgeback trudged deeper and deeper into the foggy darkness, blindly forcing his way through the trees until he came to the side of a murky riverbed.

Everything that had gone wrong in his life caught up to him in an instant, and Silenziosa curled up on the damp forest floor, letting out great, heaving sobs despite the agonizing pain in his side from where the centaur’s arrows had pierced him. He resigned himself to die where he lay on the riverside, alone, away from home, and a coward.

Breathing had just started to become a little more than a dull ache when the blue green glow of a lantern was shoved into his face.

The light was blurry, and someone said, “Geez pal, you don’t look so hot.”

He remembers being lifted to his feet, watching the way the world swirled in front of his eyes before it faded into blackness.

The next time he would wake up, it would be to a familiar face.

A stark white Coatl with a wide grin and high accented voice greeted him. “Ah! So you are not dead after all my friend!”

--

The lair of Virtulent’s ally clan in the Tangled Wood bustled with activity, filled to the brim with laughter and chatter and contentment.

It made Silenziosa’s chest hurt to look at them for too long.

Elema had recognized him the second they dragged him past the gates, and she tore herself away from her work at the first opportunity to visit him in the clan’s makeshift Infirmary. She brought Rhys with her, the boy looking leaps and bounds better than he did the last time Silenziosa had seen him. She hovered over him, telling him that they had sent out dragons to look for the rest of the Virtulent, and not to worry, not to worry.

He played dumb, nodding gratefully and nudging his head into her delicate hands (she was so much like Naomi, but her hide was so dark, like Ivarr’s, he couldn’t look at her for very long) as her brother (who walked with a grace that looked so familiar, but Silenziosa couldn’t put his claw on why) peered at him over her shoulder curiously, filled with so many questions he wouldn’t get answers to.

The trackers came back a few days later with scraps of fabric and pieces of broken crates and Mallon’s body in tow.

All that searching and they didn’t find hide nor hair of a living soul.

Guilt ate away at Silenziosa’s spirit quicker than any strain of disease ever could. He became despondent for days at a time, staring blankly at the tents of the Infirmary as Elema or Rhys or Lorelei came by to visit him, their faces blurring with those of the leaders, who tried to get him to communicate with them, to get a hint where his clan could’ve gone, of what had happened.

He gave them nothing.

Biography

At first glance, Silenziosa looks rather out of place in the Vogelzang’s lair. The great, hulking behemoth never seems to move from his place in front of the Vogelzang’s vault, and his dead eyed gaze is off-putting, setting him apart from the cheerful clan mates that pass him by with a short how-do-you-do, unbothered by the fact that he can’t reply.

However, if he had the tongue in order to speak, Silenziosa would assure anyone who asked that living here, in the dark, is the closest he’s come to being happy in a long, long time.

Once part of Clan Virtulent, Silenziosa was forced to watch helplessly as his life fell apart. His friends and family died around him in droves, and the clan he grew up in began to crumble into madness in the harshness of the plaguelands. When his Chieftain declared that enough was enough, what was left of the clan packed up their belongings and headed to the Icefields in search of a better life. However, not even halfway through the Shadow flight, they were attacked in the middle the journey, and Silenziosa cut loose his cargo and fled, intending to die alone as a coward rather than face his Chieftain and the consequences of his actions.

Instead, he was found by the Vogelzang, who, upon realizing who he was, nursed him back to health, despite the fact that he wouldn’t so much as hint as to what happened to his former clan.

Still, he was integrated into the lair as soon as they found a use for him.

Although their last hoard guard met with a disastrous end, Silenziosa fills the hole she left well, and every once in a while, a little bit of his former nature shines through. He’s started to become more bold, nipping at his clanmates’ garments as they pass by or playfully tripping them with his massive horn.

Notes

Doctor's Notes: The patient possesses, or rather, he lacks, a working tongue. As a result, he communicates through grunts and gestures, but recently I have noticed him conversing with Jinmenju in a combination of writings and sign language. It seems as if our friend is not as illiterate as he led us to believe.

• Missing his tongue from an incident during childhood, refuses to talk about it
