Merlot
The Artist
640.png
lightvs1.png As you explore the intricate platforms of the aptly named Platforms, you notice a multitude of artwork around. Detailed paintings of landscapes from across Sorineth, elegant portraits of dragons in motion, heartwarming scenes of who you recognize to be the Flyers, and the occasional oddly fascinating surreal dreamscape. Each is painted with care on a variety of canvas--burlap, wood, leather, paper, even bamboo--and bring a bright light to the lair. Soon, you find a series of bamboo poles with brilliant orange burlap from broken kites stretched between them, though half are lifted to show a complex system of rope strung inside the tent. Woven among the ropes is a deep purple spiral dragon, lounging midair as he paints upside down on a finely carved wooden statue. He turns, offering you a smile as he places his brush in the water on the floor.
”Hello there! Welcome to my, ah, pavilion? Home? Art tent? Whatever. I’m Merlot, resident artist, and you?”

Origins
lightv2.png Merlot was born to a fantastically diverse clan in the lands of the Sunbeam Ruins, a place that allowed him to grow as he wished. As a hatchling, Merlot strayed from the typical rambunctious nature of spiral dragons, instead typically portraying a sense of wonder and ease in the world. Rarely did he tie himself in knots or show bursts of unrestrained energy, but rather was methodical and curious in nature. He would often spend hours on a project with intense focus (the only instance of spiral-ness showing through) before finding himself immensely satisfied and content with his work. Much of his time was spent exploring the world and what it had to offer; he dabbled in singing, music, weaving, architecture, ceramics, writing, and food craft, though found each of those unsatisfactory to him for one reason or another. Finally, Merlot attempted artistry, specifically involving painting, and it clicked. He found the medium itself incredibly diverse--water color, acrylic, oil, and beyond--and he could translate the world as he saw it to the canvas. He began to paint or draw daily, showcasing the scholarly world around him, displaying the elegance of the landscape, expressing the uniqueness of the dragons about him. Merlot was in love with art, and he soon found himself gathering a variety of plants, herbs, and other pigmanting substances to create his own paints, calling it a way to put some of himself into his work, as he never once painted himself. While traveling through the Windswept Plateau after a pigment collection, Merlot caught sight of what he discovered to be the Galestorm Flyers lair and fell in love once more. The grandness of the layout was astounding to him. Huge platforms floating freely in the sky, each a unique shape that layered over one another like a misfitting puzzle. Swinging rope bridges connected many of them while bamboo structures dotted their landmass. Huge, brightly colored kite-like wings sprouted from all angles, offering the allusion of flight though they surely wouldn’t keep the platforms in the sky on their own. Merlot quickly found Nantis and requested to paint his lair--which was promptly accepted--and spent many of his days circling the landmass to paint it in its entirety. Soon, Merlot found himself as a member of the Flyers, and he took on the artist role in their clan. Working side by side with a shy imperial named Akira, Merlot began to decorate the structures of the clan with vivid and stunning paintings, bringing a sense of life into their lair. Slowly, he and Akira built a relationship between them, finding their fascination with the world a shared interest that manifested in different ways. Now, as mate to Akira, Merlot happily spends his days looped around Akira’s neck, painting the imperial’s statues as they are developed and creating his paints with the help of resident gardeners. windv2.png

Personality
As the first dragon to join the Flyers after their move to Wind Flight, no one is surprised by the creative nature of Merlot. It is his first and most obvious trait; when Merlot isn’t sleeping, he is creating one thing or another. His time is spent mostly with his art and paints, crafting the world he sees in his own way. He focuses mostly on medium use rather than subject; with the exception of charcoal sketches, Merlot exclusively paints, though with a variety of types of paint. His work typically features landscapes or portraits of dragons he sees in the world, though he has been known to dabble in the surrealist works when he chooses to paint his dreams. Merlot finds immense satisfaction in his work, both as it transforms the land around him into something more beautiful and brings something of his into the world, but art is not all of Merlot’s time. When the spiral is not creating something, he can be found examining the world with avid curiosity, and has been known to dabble in terrarium keeping. Additionally, Merlot enjoys taking long naps with his mate Akira (typically wrapped loosely around his neck like a scarf), watching Shivani and his bees, or reading the lore of the Galestorm Flyers to get a sense of what his clan was like in the Shifting Expanse.

Author’s Note:
As much as I protest, Merlot has often chosen to read our lore while I am in the room and writing. For that reason, I loathe him. However, he is quiet and respectful of my books, and has brought me fine inks on several occasions. Our relationship is difficult to define.
~Sincerely, Midnight

He is not a warrior in any sense of the word; Merlot is easily frightened by raised or angry tones, loathes to even view physical fights, and often has to take a warrior along with him when gathering pigmenting supplies. For that reason, Merlot consistently avoids the land-based prison of the Dark Queen and her followers, and spends most of his time in the Platforms. He has built close relations not only with Akira as his mate, but Shivani, Isolda, and Asterion as he explores their crafts in the clan. He finds himself at ease in the Flyers, enjoying the chance to continue his work while exploring the vast differences in his clanmates.
