A Day's Work
Seaweed shifted out of her bed with a slight groan as Riptide shuffled around their small cave. The mirror had to be up early in order to help travellers, as few as there were, reach the cliffs. But without fail, every morning that she had to wake up before dawn, she’d rouse her mate as well. Seaweed understood that that was how things were, so had adapted her life around it. Plus, I get to the boneyards before the sun comes out.
“Goodbye, love.” Riptide smiled as she slipped out into the tunnel that connected their home to everyone else’s. Seaweed reached for her forest green wraps and various bone apparel as she watched the last wisp of cyan trail after her mate. She then pivoted her veiw to the large window to watch the mirror board her boat and set sail.
Seaweed groggily set the skull she wore onto her head as she peered out the window, absentmindedly tieing bird skulls to her wings once it sat comfortably around her horns. She partially envied those who’s outfits were simple clothing- like Riptide’s- though at the same time she delighted in constantly adding and removing apparel depending on what she found on the surface.
Speaking of which. She continued her thought as she grabbed a half-eaten fish off the table. The guardian gobbled it down before exiting the cave, meandering the opposite way from which her mate had rushed. She had to go up to the surface instead of down to the water- after all, bones were notoriously difficult to find in the ocean’s murky depths.
The first rays of sun were beginning to peek over the flat horizon of Dragonhome as Seaweed shut the hatch that led to Terreneuvia. She scanned the dusty ground, searching for any signs of decayed life. Sure enough, a dusty bird skeleton was nestled in a clustre of cacti, just close enough for the guardian to see. She made her way over to it, drinking in its delicate features as they revealed themselves.
Finally, when she had reached the outside of the cacti, she reached a claw out to pry it from its final resting place. Spines had grown- or impaled- right through the poor thing’s ribcage. One had even gone straight through a gaping eye hole.
When she’d freed the skeleton from the tangle of needles that had trapped it, Seaweed set the thing on the ground to take a closer look.
“Hmm. . . looks like a broken wing.” She mumbled to herself as she prodded at a fracture in the bone that revealed the porous structure within. Silently, as she continued to poke and prod at the thing, she built up a story.
“Wing most likely broken by a predator,” She said, matter of factly, as she carefully placed it’s pristine skull into her bag. “It tried to fly away, but ended up crashing into the cacti clustre. Painful death, hm?” The guardian couldn’t help but laugh slightly as she packed away the broken wing with extra caution. Bones made her happy, despite their macabre nature.
And happiness kept the demeaning insecurities that lived in her head at bay.
