Raised in the harsh landscape of the Ashfall Waste, Lyra was born and bred to be tough, to survive against all odds. And she was tough. She would take on anything, just to prove she could.

Except that no one remembered her. As soon as they turned away, Lyra would be forgotten. She pushed herself harder and harder. Maybe it was because she wasn't strong enough.
But as she grew older, Lyra realized that she was different, and her habit of pushing herself turned into wanting, and knowing no other way she could do anything, Lyra pushed with all of her might.

Maybe, if she pushed herself to the very edge, she could be remembered.

Lyra eventually left. No one cared. It wasn't their fault, but it hurt anyway.
The harsh landscape almost got the better of her multiple times, but Lyra welcomed the new challenge. It helped her not to think of her family, who would not remember her.

Hard pressed for food, Lyra became a thief. Lyra would not be remembered, so how could they punish her?

Thus Lyra survived.

But she found herself longing for something more. Lyra was surviving, but that was all she was doing. She wasn't really living. She wasn't laughing, she wasn't crying, she wasn't fighting, tooth and claw, for something she believed in.

Lyra didn't know what she believed in any more.
