Mercury
↠ gravekeeper

"Hidden away in the dungeons beneath the ruinous city now called Emperor's End, the gravekeeper tends to the ghosts. He talks to all those forgotten by the flow of time... and to the one he loves the most: Venus."
FCGpVbU.png

Dead Imperials are more dangerous than live ones. They always harbor the chance to turn into a harbinger of chaos and death. An insatiable beast with an appetite for those it once called friends. So when an Imperial dies in Emperor's End, they need to be disposed of. Cremate them or cast them into the eastern sea where not even the deities could find them. A disgusting thought. And yet, someone has to do it.

Initially, Mercury's choice to take care of the dead sparked a heated debate within the population of Emperor's End. While it was agreed that dead Imperials should be locked away in individual tombs beneath the earth rather than cast into the sea, it should not be done by an Imperial himself. They feared he could die among his kind, maybe even right at the site of Venus, his sister, and fuse into the next Emperor. But Ophiuchus, who feared to lose another child, insisted on Mercury taking up this duty, but not alone. Kaera, a Nocturne in search of her purpose, should watch over him.

And so, when the time had come, Mercury became the gravekeeper of Emperor's End. Unlike Ma— No, that was no longer his name. Unlike The Wanderer, he chose not to run away from the pain but face grief head on. Deep inside the caverns he spends his days now, rarely seen by visitors. The villagers will sometimes visit him. Whether it is out of concern or fear, does not matter. He has found that ghosts are better company than the living.
