The youngest of four sons, it was unlikely Vlad would ever wear the crown. Fate had other plans. In his family's kingdom dwelt a violent and gluttonous Blood Demon, sealed away by his family's magic. Close to death, it mustered the last of its power to unleash a plague upon the land. The illness took legions of the nation's citizens, infecting all three of Vlad's brothers and ultimately killing two. When at last the King himself took ill, Vlad was sent to beg the demon for a cure. Face to face with the dying creature, breathing in the thick miasma of its plague, he bartered for much more than a cure. Vlad made a pact with the demon, saving it from death, but in turn becoming its vessel. In order to prevent the demon from consuming him entirely, he killed and drank the blood of many, including his last remaining brother. Vlad kept his father bedridden, his mind addled by the plague, instead taking the title of Crown prince. Acting in his father's place, he became a ruler both beloved and feared, equally prone to acts of inexplicable cruelty and opulent generosity.
