Statement begins.

Okay, so. First off, I’m from the Foxfire Bramble. I don’t get lost easily. But somehow I did that night, two weeks ago.

I had been on my way home when the woods… changed on me. They went from dim and dull but manageable to off in a way I’d never seen before.

It was dark. I’m not really all that afraid of the dark, never have been – I want to make that clear. But that night, just… There was something about it that was just wrong, you know? Like all the light had been sucked from the world. I always carry a lantern just in case, but it wouldn’t turn on. Not even a flicker of light.

And then the cold started. Not the normal chill of where the sun never quite reaches, but a deep, pervading cold that chills you to the bone. I think it was then that I began to panic. I turned around to try and find my path back, but the trees were unfamiliar. I was entirely lost, and alone, and cold, and it was oh so dark.
I could barely see a thing, and the farther I walked back the way I came, the darker it got. Finally it got to the point where I couldn’t see a thing, not even my hand in front of my face. And then I heard it.

It was soft at first, just on the edge of my hearing. At first I thought it was just one of those auditory hallucinations you get sometimes, when you’re lost and alone. But then it grew louder, a sort of… shuffle, I think? Like someone moving without picking up their feet.

I think I really panicked then, because I started to run. I didn’t know where I was going, only that I needed to leave, to get away from whatever was out there.

I only made it a few steps before I hit a tree. I think I passed out after that, because the next thing I knew, the Bramble was back to normal.

I went home quickly after that, keeping my lantern lit. I haven’t gone outside without one since.

Statement ends.

Inky spectres, barely visible and entirely unnoticed slipped out of their prison the day the Great Library crumbled into ruins on one side. These wisps of The Shade, trapped together no longer, gathered from fragments in tainted tomes and artifacts. All of them strange, many dangerous, secreted into a warded archive by one Jurgen Lightner. Warded no longer.

Many appear to originate from The Ghostlight Ruins, others...well, no flight’s territory remains completely untouched by The Shade, does it?

Those who built their nests far too close to that secret archive paid the ultimate price, though no one found a trace of them in the aftermath. Only their eggs remained, infected by the fear-drenched fragments of shade, some more than others, perhaps. Either way, this invasive presence transformed all of them to their very core, resulting in one of the Shadeborn.

While these unlucky hatchlings are not contagious like those with a more shallow infection, they must feed it magic, and eventually their descent into madness is nearly assured. At that point, no matter how steadfast they were as guardians against The Shade, they may end up as agents spreading its fear and terror.

"I enjoyed all of your entries, but it was the most difficult choosing a favourite between the darkness entry in this bio, your web entry you won web day for, and your buried entry. Ultimately I picked this entry because I feel like you got the essence of Darkness as a fear pretty spot-on and the pacing was nice and ominous for the pursuit of that unknown thing creeping in it. Also it made for a different story spotlight from your other dragon prize.
Thanks for all the awesome stories!"
