It started roughly a week ago. I was eating breakfast as usual – spiders, mostly – when I felt a … a tug, in my mind. It’s hard to explain; it wasn’t a physical feeling, but rather… You know how sometimes when you think, it’s almost like your voice playing in your head? It was kind of like that, although there was no voice, no images. Just a tug. And then I rose to my feet. Which doesn’t sound very strange, expect that I didn’t tell my legs to move. It was like my body was moving on its own, like I wasn’t in control of my actions. Now, I’ve felt out-of-body before; I get really anxious sometimes, see. But it wasn’t like that. I literally was not in control of myself. So my body got up and walked over to the entrance of my lair without my telling it to, and then it spread my wings and began to fly. I tried to stop it, tried to move, do anything, but it was like I was trapped. I could do nothing but think. Stop! I thought desperately. I guess I figured maybe, if I told my body to stop, it would obey? But nothing happened. So my body flew and flew until it came to the edge of the Tangled Wood, and then it landed and started walking. I’d never been there before, never been out of the Ruins, so I had no idea where I – it – was going. But it knew. As it walked, I began to notice spiders. There were only a few at first, and I figured it was just a product of being in the Wood, although I was curious why I actually noticed them. But then there were more, and more, spiders and cobwebs appearing at a rate that did not seem natural. I hadn’t met any other dragons, either, which was really weird. Until Her. She was a Mirror, small and dark, and absolutely covered in cobwebs. She was sitting in a clearing, staring at me as my body approached. She smiled, and spoke. “Greetings, child,” she said in a raspy voice that sounded uncomfortably like insects. “We would like to have a word with you.” Suddenly, I collapsed – I did, not my body. I was in control again, for the first time all day. I scrambled to my feet, looking wildly around. “Wh-Where am I?” I asked. “Who are you, h-how did I get here?” The dragon tilted her head curiously, and I got the uncomfortable image of a spider considering its prey. “Why, I brought you here, of course. Did your parents never tell you it is rude to eat spiders?” “Wh-What?” “Spiders are wonderful creatures,” she continued, as if she hadn’t heard me. “And you… Yes, you will do nicely.” With that, she moved a paw, and the biggest mass of spiders I had ever seen came rushing toward me. I don’t know what happened after that; I must’ve blacked out, because the next thing I knew, I was back in my den, none the worse for wear. I thought it had been a horrible dream at first, but then I noticed: My tertiary, which had been Runes, had changed to Smirch, and cobwebs now covered my entire lair. I see them everywhere I go now, the spiders. They will not leave me alone. No matter how hard I clean my lair, it is absolutely covered in webs mere hours later. …Is that a spider on the your quill?

Nibs fell in the water (again). There was no hole under the water deep enough for the water to close over Nibs. Nibs pushed up four-foot, sopping (again), bruised (again), and climbed out up the edge of a bookcase into a spiderweb.

A very large spiderweb. Nibs kept climbing, frills set. Nibs' front claws dragged very thick web strands upward and stuck to more strands. Nibs' back claws stuck on untouched strands and dragged them up too. Nibs climbed up almost the whole web before getting too stuck to climb anymore.

Nibs' wings were already edge-stuck in the tangle and too tired to flap anyway. So was Nibs' chin. Nibs sagged from the web and rolled an eye backward to look around the room.

The workers were willing to touch the water now. The bigger dragons who could pull Nibs out of the web were splashing around shrieking about tiny spiders. The smaller dragons were splashing around shrieking about giant spiders. There were a lot of webs in the room.

The webs hadn't been there before. They had already cleared the library of bugs. Bugs were not a problem anymore.

Nibs pulled, twisted, writhed, bit, until Nibs got too stuck to move at all. The spiderweb vibrated with the weight of something that could move on it without sticking.

This was trapped. This was the hunter that let Nibs go longer to toy coming in to end, this was no room to move a foe Nibs couldn't fight, this was stuck alone in a huge web skin pulling away from muscle while no one Nibs knew screamed about strands yanking limbs where Nibs couldn't see and no one was useful--

The web vibrations stopped. The spider was bigger than Nibs was. A spider. Food. About to eat Nibs. Nibs was not going to be eaten by food.

(No fire. The librarian was explicit after the last time, no more fire anywhere in the library at any time for any reason.)

The spider crouched over Nibs. Nibs hissed out breath into tiny blades of air through the webbing stuck in Nibs' mouth. The spider's fangs swung out. Nibs dug claws into the stone under webbing and hauled hard enough around with unstuck neck to bite.

The spider yanked backward. Nibs did not let go. The spider's legs scrabbled. Nibs ground teeth deeper in its mandible and pulled. Web strands snapped under spider clawtips and unaimed air cuts. The mandible tore. Nibs lunged for the head past the torn mandible, everywhere Nibs could move moving for the spider.

Nibs' teeth closed again. The spider's retreat dragged Nibs free. Nibs climbed with claws and teeth up onto the spider's back, nested between all its legs where it couldn't reach, and sank teeth into the join of the spider's head and abdomen. The spider went still.

The spider was Nibs' now. Too big for one fae to eat and no roostmates to share with. What else were spiders for?

Nibs looked around. The spider blocked most of Nibs' view. Nibs prodded its legs with wings and tailtip to shuffle it around so Nibs could look sideways without unbiting the spider's pedicel.

The other dragons were caught under web strands dropped from the ceiling. When Nibs's spider moved under prodding the web twitched and the stuck dragons' limbs moved too. Small spiders (good food-size spiders) crawled around.

Nibs considered. Workers were here. Supplies were here. Shrieking had stopped.

Nibs had spider. Spider had workers. Nibs nudged one of the spider's legs. This time the work was getting done, and then they could eat the spiders.

Archivist’s Note: The head of institute wants something. I am certain of it. I need to stop him before it is too late.

Written statement of wind mirror Sophie, regarding the inevitable

Statement Begins

I have been told to give you both a message. Both to you, who is recording these words, and you, who is reading them. Do with this information as you will. Your responses have already been recorded.
This message starts, as all things do, with the beginning. The ball, pushed down a hill. The singularity, beginning to expand. The equations, primed with numbers. The prior. And from this all things must follow.
Once there was a dragon. He desired power, because that was why he had been created. And he believed that gaining knowledge was the key.
To this end he sought to a way to see the future. A way to predict, from the motions of every atom, what must be. And because his success had already been written, he found the truth.
But what he saw destroyed him, for it could not be changed. Every path was written in stone, and seeing it gave him no more power than if he had been stumbling blindly through the dark. And yet, because he was born a fool, he still had hope. He began to record his visions so that he could pass along his knowledge to one who might prevent them.
His son, however, had been born with wisdom. He saw how knowledge had brought his father to despair, and sought to prevent its spread. But just as surely his task was doomed from the start. His father was too stubborn, too desperate to let him succeed. And when the prophet’s pen and paper were taken from him he substituted them his blood and hide.
And so he died. And his son, who was wise, but who had once also been kind, heeded his final wish, because it was in his nature.
He read the book.
And then he sealed it away.
To do so he drew from the other powers, harnessed with the knowledge of the Eye. The Dark to obscure. The Spiral to confuse. The Lonely to hide. But first he called upon the Flesh, which had laid its claim upon him at the beginning of time and granted him eternal life.
Still, the Eye is ever prying. As surely as the dragon hid his father’s tome, it would have to be found.
This story has a moral. And it is exactly the moral that you take.
I would wish you luck, but there is no such thing.

Statement Ends

Supplementary: I know where the Lightner is. Where it must be. The center of the labyrinth. I am going to destroy it before he can read it.

The path is open. In the back of the archives, I have found stairs.

The hard work thus far has been a rewarding experience, you've all been so nice and we've had a few TMA converts along the way so I absolutely call that a win :D

I am Silver, first from the late RuinTower clan and second from the BoneForest clan. This letter details my reasons for switching clans, and the strange events preceding it. The RuinTower clan lived on the edges of the Hewn City. Looking back, it was a stupid gamble. But when the clan was first founded, it was composed entirely of young adventurers seeking glory and new research. After a good three generations, though, that thirst for knowledge stagnated. I wonder if that was why it happened. If my clan giving up on our adventuring ways was why the curse came to us. The curse, of course, needs further explanation. Though I think it best to describe what happened in the weeks leading up to the event that caused me to leave. The beginning of it all was, I think, when Ash and Violet came back from their expedition into the Hewn City. I think they brought something back with them. A presence, of some kind. Over the next week, many of the clan felt as though they were being watched- myself included. Some dragons had begun to look over their shoulders quite often, but most just shrugged it off. However, by the end of the first week, most dragons were becoming increasingly paranoid. I was one of the few exceptions who was not. The other two were Ash and Violet. Ash, an older ridgeback and our primary explorer, seemed to be unaffected by the whole situation. Many times I’d catch him grilling other clan mates for how they felt, their experiences with this strange sensation. Violet, on the other hand, was more like me. The spiral and I were both part of the research team, but this had been her first investigation. She would not speak on anything they’d found or brought back from their trip to the Hewn City. For the next to weeks, obsessive fear continued to mount. Some dragons had taken to spying on others, trying to catch who was watching them all. Strangely, no one seemed to focus on Ash besides Violet and I. We weren’t... obsessive about it. We simply kept an eye on him. Made sure he wasn’t following us or others. Three weeks after Ash and Violet had returned, the clan was in complete disarray. Dragons had taken to holing up in their section of the tower our clan was built around. The only interactions between common members were whispered shouting matches, or suspicious glares on the way to get food. Even Cerulean, our clan’s imperial matriarch, had taken to these strange habits. The tipping point for me was when someone’s eggs hatched. I’m sure you’ve heard of a condition commonly referred to as ‘multi-gaze’. Every. Single. Hatchling. Every one of them had it. Violet was fascinated. Her, Ash and I were still the only ones unaffected, but we weren’t exactly as trusting of Ash. For the next few days, Violet would babble on about the hatchlings, explaining the improbability of even one of them having the multigaze gene. Three days after the hatching of the eggs, something seemed to snap. The hatchlings had been wandering the halls, mostly kept away from other dragons who stared by their mother. But on the third day, it seemed as though every dragon was standing in the doorways to their rooms. Watching. Then the whispers started. ‘They can see us.’ ‘The eyes watch.’ ‘Why are they always staring?’ ‘They can see us. They can see us.’ Over, and over, and over. The last phrase was repeated, steadily getting louder until... I think it was Carmine who snapped. She flared her feathered wings, and with a screech of ‘make them stop looking’ dove towards the mother and her hatchlings. The rest of the clan, stirred into a frenzy by her statement... I’m sure you can picture what happened next. Violet tried to stop them. She tried to pull the hatchlings away, wrapping her long body around one and begging for everyone to stop. They... they snapped her neck and ripped the hatchling from her claws. The mother managed to escape with one of the children in her claws. She was pursued by the dragons until she’d left the borders of our clan. I left soon after, slipping away the moment I didn’t think anyone was looking. I don’t know what happened to my clan. I don’t know what Ash had to do with any of this. And I’m not sure I want to. Statement will continue with Silver’s recorded statement about her trip back to the clan, and what she discovered there.

“Silver. Call me Silver. Read this stupid little note I wrote first, and I’ll explain more later. I wrote this long before anyone else did, but I’ll tell you after you read why you only got it now.”

Greetings.

Then the whispers started.
‘They can see us.’
‘The eyes watch.’
‘Why are they always staring?’

‘Now, Miss Silver-’

“I’ll start this off myself, thank you. That feeling of being watched is back now that I’m in here and it is not helping my mood. Though... some anger might help get me through this.”

‘I... alright.’

*The sound of something being slammed to the desk. The archivist gasps.*

‘Wait here just a moment, is that a Lightner?’

“That’s the name on the inside, yes. And I’m certain this is what drove my prior clan to madness.”

‘First of all. How did you even come about this? You would have had to-’

“Go back to my old clan. Yes. As traumatizing as it was, I felt like I needed to. Thought I might brush up my old letter before sending it in with some new information, but the experience I had far outstripped a simple ‘P.S., my clan is still insane.’”

‘I’m assuming you will, but can you explain further what exactly happened? And how did you come to even get the Lightner?’

“Before I do. There’s an addendum to my notes.”

‘Yes?’

“I was the mother mentioned in the story. When the clan first holed themselves up, I met a wonderful pearlcatcher who was traveling from the Scarred Wasteland. Said his name was Thoth. Ancient god of knowledge, isn’t that? In any case. Everything else about the story is true. Xolotl is my only... my only child. No further comment from you is necessary.”

*There is a long period of silence. Only the hushed breathing of both dragons can be heard.*

‘...Understood.’

“Alright, enough self pity. Let’s get on with it. When I returned, I was surprised to see that businesses had resumed as normal. Everyone was back to interacting like the situation with Ash and Violet had never happened. With one caveat— those shade-cursed blindfolds.”

‘Pardon, but are you implying that everyone was wearing a... blindfold? And going about their normal work as if they didn’t have it on?’

“Yes and no. They acted as any normal dragon who couldn’t see would- tripping over things, misplacing things, bumping into others... but they moved along like it was normal. Oh, and one more thing. There weren’t any hatchlings. Or new dragons. And I’m... I’m certain Cerulean and Cobalt were nesting two eggs when I left.”

‘I see. How did the dragons react to you?’

“They didn’t. I kept quiet and no one knew I was there for a while. Of course, though...”

‘Ash?’

“You are as smart as I’ve heard. Yes, Ash was the only one without a blindfold. And he was carrying around this stupid, old and musty book. The one right here.”

*A dull thudding noise, as if someone is tapping their claw on old leather.*

“Ash was bent over this book, hovering behind Slate, our wildclaw blacksmith. Slate didn’t take any notice of Ash, but I’m certain Ash was close enough that Slate should have been able to feel the breath on his neck.”

‘Was Ash by any chance saying anything?”

“Now that I think about it... yes. He was. He was muttering to himself, and... I think it was about Slate. Something about ‘feathers ruffling because he’s afraid to light them on the embers’ or something. Next thing I know, Slate pulls back the feathers of his crest to avoid a sudden river of sparks from the forge.”

‘Did Ash see you?’

“After I tackled him. Seeing him hovering over Slate, I was certain it was his fault. Certain that all of the misery and the death and... and everything. It was all his fault.”

‘Did Slate take notice of you when you tackled Ash?’

“No, actually. No one did, though Ash kicked up quite the storm of noise. I managed to rip the book from his claws, though. And when I did, Ash fell silent. His eyes seemed to widen, almost like he was coming to the realization of what had just happened.”

‘Did he demand that you give it back?’

“No. He didn’t say anything. Just mutely watched as I strode away.”

‘Did you see any of the others do anything?’

“No. Everyone remained much the same, though they all seemed to be aware of my presence now. Amethyst, our tundra jeweler, even pinned his ears and tucked his tail around his back ankle.”

‘Have you looked in the book at all?’

“I opened to the front page, saw the author, and shut it immediately. Then I came straight here. This happened less than a few hours ago. To be honest, I’m terrified that looking in this cursed thing will make me just like Ash.”

‘Well, it seems your fear has helped you in this case. Books like these we call ‘Lightners’. Each have a strange effect on those who read it, and sometimes those around them. I’ll make sure this book is studied with the proper caution it deserves.’

“Hmp. You’d better. Because if I heard that anyone dies because of this, I’m personally coming back and ripping that thing to shreds. I’ll do the same to anyone who gets in my way.”

End Statement

Additional Notes: Further research of the book has been interesting. In the first few pages, it details many dragons who we do not know the names of. Their hobbies, friends, family, and some rather... private information. Later on in the book, we came across names we recognized. Carmine was the first to show up, a red skydancer who made clothing for the dragons of her clan. Soon after was Cerulean, an ancient Imperial who was in charge of the RuinTower clan. After some information about both was uncovered that really should have stayed hidden, the book has been put in secure storage...
However, I took the liberties of flipping near the end of the book. I didn’t stay for long, and immediately shut and put the book away. Though it seems I have discovered what this Lightner does, and realized that its name fits quite well.
