Biography
"The Pearlcatcher sits comfortably before the small gathering of hatchlings, reading out of a book held in her claws. She pauses only to glance at you and tell you to drop off your hatchling, before going back to the book."
PROFILE
ITEMS & FAMILIAR |
PERSONALITY & QUIRKS Onyx is perhaps the most amiable dragon within the Sanctuary. She tends to be an inviting dragon that rarely says a cruel word to anyone. Only Onyx’s mate can incite something sharp out of her, and even then that is rare. Her genuine good-natured personality has a stark contrast to her brother’s more deceptive and almost cynical personality. Onyx can be a bit self-conscious and unsure as she isn’t the most confident when it comes to her own appearance and words. Onyx can be a bit shallow at times and judges places and dragons based on appearances, but is quick to fix the mistake or apologize. Onyx loves hatchlings and dragonets alike, sharing her own love for stories with them. She dedicates an hour of her time with students to be a story hour of sorts and reads aloud a book for her class. Onyx is also very familial and loves to have and spend time with her own hatchlings and mate. ABOUT History Like her brother Umbra, Onyx was raised by a story-loving mother and gossip sharing father. Unlike her brother though, Onyx always took after their mother. She loved the tales that her mother would read to her before bed and loved imagining those characters in real life. Onyx would head to the library whenever she could and find a stack of books to bring home. She’d then read and discuss the book with her mother or with her best friend. Onyx spent most of her childhood when not at school buried in a book of long forgotten fairytales. As Onyx grew older she started to feel unfulfilled. Sure she loved to read and all, but what did she want to do in life? Her pearl felt embarrassingly small and there wasn’t anything within the Hewn City that called to Onyx. Onyx searched everywhere within the city for something, anything that could help fulfill her, going to her mother for advice in the end. Moirae (Onyx’s mother) understood Onyx’s frustration to an extent and advised her to visit one of her older brothers, Umbra. Her mother told her that Umbra had joined a clan that seemed to have more variety than the Hewn City and could possibly have something Onyx would be called to. Onyx was hesitant at first as the Hewn City and her family were all she’d ever known but eventually decided to pack up and leave at the age of seventeen. Afterall, she could do with a change in scenery. Onyx got lost almost immediately. Having entered the edges of Goldwood, Onyx couldn’t get her bearings. The dense treetops made it impossible for her to tell where she was going and she wasn’t used to tramping through foliage. Slowly panicking as the day waned, Onyx sped up slowly and broke into a desperate sprint. She called wildly hoping that anyone would hear her. Racing around another tree Onyx ran headlong into an unfamiliar dragon. Clutching pearl tightly, Onyx looked up into the face of who would eventually be her lifelong mate. Duskshine, as the Bogsneak introduced himself as, had been just wandering around for a late night walk when he heard Onyx screaming. He had just started to search for her when she had crashed into him and sent them both toppling. Duskshine watched amused as Onyx shook herself out and stood up, clearly containing laughter the entire time. When Onyx tightly asked where she was and where she could find the Sanctuary of Diversity, he interrupted her. “Oh I know where that is, I live there!” Duskshine informed her before promptly walking off. Onyx scrambled to chase after the willful Bogsneak, regretting every second of leaving her home. When Onyx followed Duskshine into the glen with the entrance to the Sanctuary, she didn’t expect much. Clearly no one had bothered to clean up around the outside of what is supposedly a massive underground city, and the darkened passageway didn’t give Onyx much hope. Duskshine unhesitantly dived straight in and Onyx steeled herself only a moment before following. The tunnel was big enough for a large guardian and spiraled downwards for a short measure. Blinking at the sudden brightness, Onyx was astonished by the sight of what looked like a bustling city plaza. Instead of the cramped space Onyx had imagined, the city was laid out in a way that made it feel like an open space, the dome ceiling adding to the effects. Onyx wasn’t quite sure at the time what the cavern was made out of or the pillars that dotted the square for support, but she did know that Duskshine was almost out of sight. He paused only once to gesture at her to follow before disappearing into another slightly larger tunnel. After catching up Duskshine led Onyx to another plaza, this time one that was clearly a space for houses and lairs. The houses were carved into the walls of the area and the lairs with them. Duskshine twisted through a couple blocks before coming to a stop before a house decorated with bits of cloth. “This is where I leave you, good luck.” With that his purple form slipped back the way they came without sparing even a cursory glance. Onyx isn’t sure why that offended her so much but turned to the door in front of her. Umbra and Myniara gladly welcomed Onyx into their lives. Umbra enjoyed having an old family member around and Myniara enjoyed meeting Umbra’s sibling. When Onyx explained why she had come, Umbra mentioned how a position as a teacher’s assistant had opened up. He amended that statement and told her that the Sanctuary was trying to train a replacement teacher before the current one left, and was desperate for anyone willing to deal with all sorts of hatchlings. Onyx accepted the position and spent the next year learning what she could before being promptly hired as a full time teacher and tutor. Onyx loved her job as a teacher, finally feeling fulfilled. Her love for the hatchlings was obvious and she didn’t mind the work associated with it. It was only when Onyx saw Duskshine again did she start to feel discontent again. It was only a brief glimpse across the market but Onyx was determined to find him again. She tracked him down and cornered him. At first she didn’t know what to say and settled on inquiring about him. Duskshine seemed taken aback by this but shrugged and answered. Onyx peppered him with questions until late, Duskshine firing back just as many. Onyx was pleasantly surprised to learn that Duskshine was in a field of learning as well, as she considered being a scientist just another form of learning new things. It surprised them both when the network of bells chimed the eleventh hour of the night, and Onyx started to fill up with the sadness that their surprisingly enjoyable chat was coming to a close. When Duskshine proposed meeting again at the same time, same place, Onyx happily agreed. Their practice of meeting again and again persisted throughout several years, the two eventually becoming close, and soon enough mates. Currently Onyx enjoys life as one of the Sanctuary's only teachers. She still loves her books and stories as shown even in her classroom, just as much as she loves her slowly growing family. If Onyx can spare the time she’ll visit the library and check out new books, and Duskshine always agrees to let her borrow some of his books or notes for entertainment or to show to her class. Onyx can be occasionally found after school hours tutoring some of her students if they struggle in class. Onyx and Duskshine have many hatchlings that Onyx pampers with stories. She teaches them of all the ancient legends and fairytales that slowly get forgotten, all while giving them a headstart with schoolwork. FAMILIAR BACKGROUND/PERSONALITY Duskshine once gave Onyx a Ball-Jointed Bogsneak toy that he had found as a joke, but she grew attached and now refuses to throw it away. She even named it after him! SKILLS & HOBBIES Onyx is a very fast reader, easily getting through two large books a day. She is great at remembering random facts that she's taught her students which comes in handy occasionally. Onyx briefly dabbled in her brother's craft of tailoring but absolutely hated the time it took. Instead she prefers to join Duskshine on long walks or chat with Myniara about the day.
