The desert rose. That is what Fouquieria is always called. Having bloomed and flourished in the harsh desert climate, she is truly like no other. Where others learned to deal with heat, Fouquieria controls it. She is the master of her own life and nothing or no one can ever change that. From a young age, she develops a fascination for the cacti growing around her home. It’s an odd thing for a hatchling to be interested in. The cacti are dangerous and often poisonous. Nevertheless, Fouquieria can’t stop staring at them.
As they grow older, Fouquieria learns that they can actually treat the larger cacti like trees, though they are far more useful than the run of the mill trees. The cacti hold water within them and juice. They inspire Fouquieria to not just survive in the desert, but thrive. They begin to study the strange plants. They study everything from how long they retain water to what the effects of drinking their juice is.
Eventually, Fouquieria begins to carve out of the dried husks of the cacti. She finds a love for it and it soothes her constant ache for knowledge. Turning a lifeless hunk of plant into a being makes her feel powerful. The desert however, no matter how easy to conquer, does nothing for her. She knows she must leave and be free. The sand and the dragons are suffocating. They are all dull brown. There is no life, there are no cycles. The desert is not cyclical, but stagnant.
Fouquieria decides to leave the desert clan in search of something better. They don red and gold silks to stand out from the blandness and begin to travel. As they meet more dragons, they come to realize that they can be just as unforgiving and harsh as the desert. That being said, they, like the desert, are only harsh to help others grow and flourish. Eventually, they come upon a small plague clan. It seems lovely. The dragons seem particularly lovely. On top of that, the strange pulsing vines would assuredly provide a challenge. They would not be as easy to carve as the cacti that Fouquieria was used to.
So, Fouquieria settles into the small clan and finds herself a delightful mate. Though she is always eager for more, more mates, more things to carve, more knowledge, she is content. She would love more, but she is content where she is. For now.
