A YOUNG EXPLORER
When she was a younger dragon, Absinthe loved nothing more than to listen to the clan's elders tell stories. It didn't matter if she'd heard the story a thousand times, she wanted to hear it again and again. Before long, she had all of their stories memorized and could almost tell them better than the elders themselves. Most of the members of her home clan weren't prone to wanderlust, but Absinthe was; she knew there were more stories out there, and she wanted to find them. She left her clan, striking out for parts unknown. Along the way, she discovered a knack for the healing arts, which helped her keep herself in coin along her travels. It was a lonely life, especially for a fae. Absinthe discovered that not every dragon understood her, or wanted to be her friend. But no matter who they were or where they came from, every dragon in Sonrieth had a story. At first, Absinthe tried to keep all these stories alive in her mind, telling them to new acquaintances along the way. Before long, she realized that she couldn't remember everything, even with her unusually sharp memory. Absinthe began writing down the stories whenever she could, and soon found herself with more scrolls than one little fae could carry. She enlisted help from a mysterious Guardian would would only tell her that he was searching for his charge. He wandered with her for a time, carrying her scrolls and scrolls of tales, until one day, as they came to the edge of the Windsinger's massive vortex, they saw it. |
THE ARCHIVE
Absinthe knew this building was special before she even went inside. It felt like magic from the tip of its crumbling spires to the very earth surrounding it. Without stopping to consider what might wait for her, Absinthe darted inside, the mysterious Guardian behind her."Look at all these scrolls," she said, her tail curling into inquisitive spirals. "There are hundreds of them." There were thousands, wall upon wall of them. Dusty scrolls, moldy scrolls, scrolls that had been chewed by mice and nested in by weevils. Absinthe felt like something was coiling around her heart. "All of these stories," she said, the broad fins on her head drooping. "They'll be lost unless someone can preserve them. Think of the hundreds of tales they could tell, the knowledge they could give. Someone should do something about it." She turned to her mysterious travel companion to find that he had carefully unloaded all of her scrolls, one by one, neatly lining them up in her preferred organization. "You have found what I intended you to find," he said. "Now I return to the Windsinger's service." "Wait!" Absinthe called after him, but in the next moment, he was gone in a swirl of wind. Had she really been in the presence of one of the Ascended, a servant of the Windsinger? Had he really led her to this place for a reason? Absinthe looked around at the high walls, stretching away into the darkness. Magic buzzed in the roots of her teeth. "I believe I might need some help." |
CLANMOTHER
Slowly, Absinthe's clan grew. While many of her own children were bitten by her mother's wanderlust and left the clan, new dragons came to the Archive as if drawn there. Absinthe remained at the center of it all. It is said she remembers the birth of every one of the clan's hatchlings, and the Ascension of every clan member who was chosen for the honor of serving the Windsinger. She asks one simple boon of any dragon who would join Clan Silverwind: tell her a story. Make it a true one, and show a love for the power of the story's telling, and she will be glad to welcome you to The Archive. There's only one catch - in the depths of the stacks lurk unknown dangers. It seems that some of the Archive's knowledge was, at one time, a closely guarded secret, and the magic protecting it still lingers. Absinthe herself is a well-meaning but somewhat absent-minded leader. When pressed, she will be able to recall the date of an event hundreds of years in the past, but may forget what she's eaten for breakfast that morning, or whether she's eaten at all. As she grows older and more driven by her personal quest, the clan takes it upon themselves to ensure their beloved Clanmother remembers to eat, to play with the hatchlings, and not to pull a scroll off the shelf before the Magisterium has a chance to check for nasty curses. By mutual agreement, the clan simply doesn't speak of the week Absinthe spent as a small, pink, fuzzy rabbit. |
