"Quote"

T here are rumors of a beast who sleeps below the desert. Her voice whispers from the dunes, a phantom call upon the air to lure travelers down into the quicksand.

This is the tale of the Barghest, Cicada.

Ankh returned late from his most recent excursion. The prince had sent him off to procure another artifact for the vault, yet he came instead bearing three dusty eggs. He placed them at Mirza’s feet, glancing up tentatively to meet his master’s eyes. The prince regarded him with silence for a moment before peering down.

The eggs were not viable, that much was clear the longer that Mirza studied them. The creatures incubating within the brittle shells were mummified things, their twisted forms long deceased and desiccated. “What would you have me do?” The prince questioned.

“I would have your blessing”.

It was not often that Ankh spoke and his voice was a dry and haunting whisper upon the air. “I would have. . . life”. The prince mused over Ankh’s request. These were certainly the children of a beast and they would be cursed creatures as their father was; yet even he could not deny that they had a right to live.

“Very well”, Mirza agreed. He sensed the essence of the lives that had slipped away, but they had been contaminated by other things - the presence of insects that had landed atop once glistening shells. These too would be blessed and brought forward into new life.

As summer approached, Mirza’s blessing took hold. The hatching of the three eggs was accompanied by the eruption of a myriad of bizarre insect swarms. The children themselves were strange as well. They had their father’s form, yet they were also imbued with the forms of the creatures that had been reincarnated alongside them.
