Lore
She had always been a bit off.
It comes of being an only child. It comes of never being permitted the company of other children. It comes of being raised alone, surrounded by gleaming ivory walls. It comes of being so, so lonely.
She had never been a stupid child.
When one is alone, one is often bored. When one is alone, one entertains oneself. When one is alone, books are often the only companionship available. A book is why she finally understood.
She had always done her duty.
No matter what, she did as custom told. No matter what, she did what was asked of her. No matter what, she would not let her family, her people, down.
It did not matter how uncomfortable she was. Or tired. Or sad. She did what she must.
She had always felt caged.
She knew she had a good life, so much better than so many. That did not lessen the pain: the pain of being told you're special, but never feeling it.
At first, she had sought counsel. It had done no good. "What do you have to be sad about? You are a princess." "Why can't you behave as every other princess has, since time immemorial? They didn't complain, and neither should you!"
She learned quickly, from a young age, that help wasn't coming, so don't bother asking.
How do you explain loneliness when you're surrounded by people? The feeling that you're a different species, a moth among butterflies, similar in appearance yet so different in needs?
She had always held darkness within her.
She tried so hard to hold it all in. She did not mean to be sad, to cry at the slightest provocation, to be prone to bouts of melancholy, to worry about the smallest things as a gerbil nibbles at a cracker. But just because she didn't mean it, doesn't mean she wasn't blamed for it.
She was often told that light left a room at her entering it. That she sucked the joy from the air, the laughter from the very lips it came from. Her inability to to smile, nod, fein interest, despite the supposed importance of the either the conversation or the speaker, a source of constant exasperation.
Books offered a refuge. Books did not scold, or mock, or cringe at her presence. They offered her kindness: an escape, however short. In one, she found an answer.
The curse of the black tears. The curse to watch for storms on a sunny day. The curse to take any harsh word as a knife to the heart. The curse of a moth amongst butterflies.
She was not alone. There were others. And she had been denied them.
Sadness and pain turned to rage. And she held it in. Until she could no longer.
She had always tried to silent
She tried so hard not to trouble others with her dark moods and black tears. She would hide herself away when she could, so much easier to let them come in private than to try, and usually fail, to choke them back.
She had spent so, so long thinking she was broken and alone. She was neither.
She did not blame them for never telling her. They only saw a curse. They could not see the power.
The power to see the storm coming. The willingness to dance in its rain, scream with its thunder, each lightning strike a flash of triumph.
The power to make a stand. To stand for what is right, even if it is not what is in favor. The willingness to poison a conversation, a gathering, a friendship. To choose, not the virtue of politeness, but the divinity of kindness. The power to see they are not the same thing.
The power of a moth. To see the beauty of single light in the darkest night, a beauty butterflies will never understand.
She had tried, for so, so long, to be silent, for the comfort of others, at the sake of her own.
But now, at last, she roared. She roared, and did not stop.
She had always held darkness within her.
She had finally let it free.
She would never cage it again.
The princess of lonely walls became the queen of poison tears.
