Shaw

From the moment he awoke, he knew exactly who he was and exactly who he would become. Near-instantly, the weakness of his fledgling mind was enveloped in light. A flow of life was delivered to him, bursting with colors and scenes and senses. The rush left him giddy and amazed—He had been alive for mere seconds, yet he was knowledgeable and complete! It was wonderful to be himself, a soldier of the Earthshaker. Carrying on his Father’s purpose would be only the greatest of pleasures, the most noble of professions. Above everything else in the world, it was who he truly wanted to be.

A heartbeat later, something new rose into being, swirling through the areas of his vessel that had not yet been explored. It sang out in the darkness, resonating with the depths of his soul. He welcomed it with open arms and directed it to the center of his mind. Something about the existence seemed proper and powerful; there was a sense of importance about it, but what was it exactly?

Aha, the presence was a name. A most perfect name, at that. It flowed through him and settled into every last cell.

He was ready to step into the world.

Shaw opened his eyes and stretched his stiff limbs. The stimuli felt natural to his mind, so an image was constructed with ease: he was in a vast cave, lost amidst a fleet of dragons. They all rushed about, tending to fellow Obelisks and dormant statues. Traces of Earthshaker’s power lingered in the surrounding stone and something sinister churned far beneath his feet.

Belatedly, the Obelisk became aware of a presence beside him. He turned his head in a slow arc, catching the dragon in one tired eye. It was a Fae, presumably female, aligned with the Arcane Flight.

“Hello,” he rasped. “Were you the one who awakened me?”

“Yes, it was me. My name is Pyra. Have you found yours?”

“I am Shaw,” the drake replied. “What brought you here?”

Pyra placed a thin talon on her chin as she constructed an answer. “Well,” she began, “I’m the co-leader of the Skyreach auxiliary expedition team. Dragonhome requested assistance, so we came to help awaken the Obelisks.”

“Skyreach… Is that a clan?” the name was pleasant to Shaw. Something about it seemed like fate to him. Perhaps it had been carved into the stone of his future. Perhaps it was a pebble on his path.

“Yes. It’s a clan in the Zephyr Steppes, if you know where that is.”

Shaw nodded, holding a picture of the calm territory in his mind. “May I come with you on the return trip?” he asked, his voice resolute.

Pyra fanned her crests in a motion that seemed pleased. “Of course.”

And that was how it all began.
