A painter seeking answers to impossible questions. Ricket's life began with the assumption of its quick end. Her degenerative bone disease rendered all four of her legs quite unable to support her weight, and in typical Plague fashion, her parents were given the choice between two difficult decisions: allow their daughter to pass naturally, or end her pain themselves. Fortunately, they opted for the former in the hopes that she would pull through. And true to the heartiness favored by Plaguelings, Ricket managed to do so. She could move herself by dragging her chin forward, and became quite adept at traveling in this manner. With her willingness to survive proven, her clan was quick to grant her accessibility aids in the form of a homemade wheelchair and wing props. Her heightened ability to walk only encouraged the dragon's mobility, and soon, she was taking on more complicated motor tasks - most notably, painting. A small brush could easily fit between the perk of her teeth with some effort, and through trial and error, Ricket figured out how to commit her life to canvas. Subjects of her art frequently include other disabled Plaguelings such as herself, whom occupy a unique niche in the Scarred Wasteland's culture. Once deemed unfit for survival and now considered equals to the able-bodied through their struggle for life, Ricket is not sure whether to feel pride or disgust with her fellows. Why was it forced upon her, specifically, to prove her right to life? But then again, was that not the charge of every Plagueling? These complicated feelings about her Flight are expressed through her art and, as of recently, her voice, as she posits herself as a spokesdragon of the disabled. Academic conferences have taken some getting used to on her hand, considering her lack of formal education, but general enthusiasm for her cause has mostly muted any feelings of panic that she would otherwise feel. This activism work has taken her past the Scarred Wasteland's borders and into the heart of Sonrieth, though at heart, she knows the Wyrmwound as home and returns often. Some of her best work is created in the wake of these long journeys, when she is finally given ample opportunity to rest her head. Another one of Ricket's responsibilities is to the "Mother's Cough" artisan cooperative, a collection of Plague-based artists intent on blending Plague culture and art for the wider Sornieth artisan community. Long used to feelings of inequity, Ricket believes in the organization's commitment to depicting the wealth and berth of Plague culture, and is eager to contribute her own work to it as often as she can. Her travels give her ample opportunity to speak on behalf of the organization, much to the appreciation of its permanently Plague-based members. She also appreciates the means through which to feel genuine connection to her culture, finding a sort of pride in being a member to MC that she would not otherwise hold for Plague alone. Ricket has been working with the Rosethorn College for years now. Her artistic expertise and knowledge of Plague's customs is highly valued by the head scholar, Alsiosus, who is hell bent on documenting any interesting information they come across. As a result, Ricket has come to know their primary scribe Mira very well, and the pair love to hang out outside of documenting Ricket's knowledge. |
