s t o r y Famous last words of a magician: "I think I made a mistake." ...but the damage had already been done, and the scars now long-set. In experimenting with her powerful magic, she inadvertently created a high-pressure explosion mere inches from her snout. Duskbreak does not hide her face in fear of what others may think of it. True, the marks now etch her face like the trenches hatchlings dig in wet mud with sticks; deep, and bleeding, never aging along with her. Looking at her unmasked is to look at a fresh victim, wounds gaping in colors most rather never knew that the flesh was capable of adopting. It is a gruesome sight, but not one that Duskbreak feels the need to apologize to the world for. Rather, it is the effect that the marks have on others that she fears. The accident had punched holes in both her physical and spiritual body. Now, magic flows freely from the pit of her stomach and escapes her face. A balloon losing air, the wounds twist and yawn, great vents of magics swelling under her skin. The tangible thick of arcane magic hung around the tundra in warning, setting the ground around her wild and erratic. Unpredictable events followed the tundra like a ghost, haunting her every step. And yet, she could not have asked for a better result. The magic that she was experimenting was had sought a cure to the magic that consumed her from within. True, she had been powerful, too powerful - her magic threatening to turn her flesh to conduit if she could not keep up with its ever-quickening pace. The accident, then, was a hidden miracle. Leaking left her weaker but safer from herself, no longer a threat to those around her. When her face exploded into blood and bone, it was the first time in years that the magician ever got the chance to relax - and now, she spends her days in peace alongside the Spirited Lady and her partner. Not only does the mask protect her magic from harming others, it collects her lost essence, circulating it safely into her armor and tomes for later use. |
