What’s out there, beyond the stars? The first time Galilea sees the dark move, she waits patiently for her instructor’s attention before she tells him what she’s spotted. Soon enough, several of the Oculus’ most prestigious arcane scholars are gathered around her telescope, muttering to each other in low voices and sharp gestures. The other students are shuffled off to bed, but she remains. She’s small enough to escape notice. For hours, she listens to the adults speak. It is the first time she realises that they don’t know what they’re talking about, either. The next day, she is invited to join the Circle of the Watchers. In the Crystalspine Reaches, she learns to chart the stars, and the spaces between them where the black unknown has a mind of its own. Countless hours are spent in front of the telescope. It’s rare for her to spot anything, but her sisters tell her that most dragons go their whole lives without seeing it. She asks the Nova-Mother once, “What are the maps for? What do we do with them?” “Nothing,” Nova-Mother says. “There is nothing we can do. But the information we gather now might make all the difference in the future.” Galilea revises her hypothesis. Perhaps some adults know what they’re talking about, after all. |
She had never truly fit in at the Oculus – what place could she have, with no magical talent to speak of, in the city of mages – but she had been a consummate student, and she puts her knowledge to use now. “You have such a talent with arrays,” her teacher once told her, “it’s a shame you’ll never be able to use them.” She doesn’t need to use them. She has sisters for that. Matrices and arrays are sketched in charcoal and then drawn in chalk, tested and revised and tested again. She layers them carefully, so that the different spells interact without interfering. If Nova-Mother wonders what the latest class of initiates is doing with all their spare time, she doesn’t ask. When they reach the limits of what the arcane can achieve, shadow-casters are recruited to help. Gali and her sisters pool their money to commission a metalworker. The finished project is a small brass orb, brimming with magic. Nova-Mother’s expression is inscrutable when they present it to her. One of her sisters casts the spell, but Gali’s the one to activate the matrix, and they are surrounded: all the stars they’ve mapped spill out, pinpoints of pulsing arcane energy, and every so often, thick shadow magic pools between them. It is the first three-dimensional map of the Shade in the cosmos. What’s out there, beyond the stars? The answer is: what isn’t? |
