Instead, as a child her parents fell to a pair of talented young usurpers whose reign changed her pack irrevocably. Viperlash, despite the new alphas’ having the right to kill the offspring of the previous alphas, was allowed to live so she could become their heir’s broodmare and cement the new alphas’ right to rule. From then on Viperlash was scorned by packmates as a way to gain favor with the new alphas. Her peers bullied her relentlessly, allowed to get away with anything that didn’t mar her permanently. When the pack itself grew unforgiving under cruel alphas, Viperlash was frequently denied food or decency. Despite this, she held onto a disdainful demeanor, one of the few things she could control to appear unbroken. Very few of her packmates spared kindness for the young Mirror. Of those who did only two memorialized in Viperlash’s mind. Palehunter, an esteemed hunter, did not interfere with the pack’s callousness directly but slipped scraps to neglected packmates. During the few hunts she was allowed on, he was always there to provide encouragement and guidance, oftentimes assisting Viperlash without a thought. She secretly admired the older Mirror and vowed to one day repay the favor. It devastated Viperlash when he left one day without warning, leaving her with a little less hope. The second that earned Viperlash’s eternal gratitude was an elderly, respected member of the pack. Aspclaw raised Viperlash to the best of her abilities, teaching her the essentials of survival, and shielded the youngling when she could. Unfortunately, Aspclaw was one of the packmates who, when she caught a deadly illness, was left behind and forgotten. Her last wish was for Viperlash to live and was the reason she endured their pack’s mistreatment. The pack shattered near the end of Viperlash’s adolescent years, driven apart by years of internal conflict. She was forced to flee from her homelands and wandered with no direction, no hope, and no goal. For a while her life was aimless- until she heard tales of a renowned white cloaked hunter. Given a purpose she searched far and wide for years, using her subtle magic to gather necessary information. After many misleading trails, Viperlash found the Sanctuarium where Palehunter resided. It took Viperlash days to corner her former packmate. She confronted him unapologetically, determined to express her thanks and repay him. In a moment of impulsiveness, she unabashedly beseeched Palehunter to take her on as an apprentice and refine the skills he had previously begun teaching her. She took his befuddled acceptance in stride, boldly accompanying him on his hunts and cementing a longtime friendship. Current Life Viperlash is unable to settle into any specific role, picking up jobs as they come. Typically her jobs revolve around gathering information or tracking down items/people. Occasionally she’ll take on more physically intensive offers, but only if she determines they’re worth the risk. |
