a world left behind
written by Scorisyn The Nightmares weren’t really expecting to find a Guardian hatchling chirping curiously at them, delivered on the base of their revered Shade statue. Quickly calling up their priestess, Kira, they were eager to sacrifice this hatchling to the Shade, wondering how special the sacrificial ceremony would be. If this sudden appearance wasn’t a sign that the Shade favored them, what was? They were only waiting for Kira to determine the sacrificial method. They did not expect Kira to determine that this hatchling must not know the Shade in its lifetime, especially not through a sacrifice. The cult grumbled. Chaos could be seen fighting Kira both physically and verbally over it. Kira overwhelmingly won, insisting with a persistence quite unlike her. So, it was conceded. The Guardian was abandoned immediately. Not everyone wanted to release him, however. Wasn’t it possible for the chief priestess, however respected she may be, to be wrong? And so on the night that the strange Guardian was released, a certain Imperial named Ghast procured some supplies and gathered the little thing up. At first, Ghast wished to perform a small ritual sacrifice to the Shade, then pretend nothing had happened. That was not how it went. The Guardian had a terrifying aura around it, as if it was possessed by something greater. It terrified the Imperial, who was also young and inexperienced. In a panic, Ghast purchased a breed change scroll, keeping the Guardian in captivity and hiding him. It wasn’t so terrible of a life. The newly-changed Pearlcatcher was named Pyxis, and as Ghast slowly climbed the ranks of the Nightmares, he gained more trust. Ghast introduced Pyxis into the cult, as if Pyxis was simply a dragon found in the wilderness, agreeing with the cult’s views. Both Ghast and Pyxis fought and trained together, both powerful warriors. Despite this, Pyxis was not satisfied. The thing inside him found the Shade something to be reviled. In the end, he drove himself from the clan, leaving a simple note that wished Ghast well and specified that he would wish them to meet again. Pyxis found his fortune temporarily in the Starfall Isles. The libraries there were massive, and he was in awe. He spent his days in the Tourmaline Archives, devouring books on possessions — for he was sure that he was possessed. There could not be another explanation. He had grown up accepting that he was one of several inhabitants of his very own body. He happened upon the topic of godly possession. And suddenly it did make sense — vengeful gods would, upon their death, slip into the body of a dragon. It would remain, weak and fragile, in the corner of the dragon’s mind, trying to control its actions. Armed with this knowledge, the Pearlcatcher did what could be considered a very stupid thing, as his cohabitant slowly drove him to madness. He attempted a homemade exorcism — but he intended to exorcise a god, from his own body. Needless to say it did not go well, and only through his sheer strength from years training under the cult’s guidance did Pyxis survive, a weak husk of what had been. Stranded somewhere in the Frigid Floes, he accepted that he might never be found. Luckily, his salvation was in the form of a frustrated Pearlcatcher flying down to the Southern Icefield to, in her own words, “exact vengeance”. Her name was Carina — and Pyxis was almost immediately bodily repulsed by her. Despite the god’s absence, he could not stand her presence. He quickly discovered why — she reeked of Shade, to his well-honed senses. She seemed determined, but not malevolent. She spent a day assisting him in recovery, then sweetly informed him that she would be back, to escort the weaker dragon to her home clan. He hadn’t waited very long before Carina was flying back, much more cheerful than before. Only later did he learn that the Shade-touched Pearlcatcher had actually taken this trip along with her brother Scorpius to avenge her own curse by murdering the cult who had inflicted the Shade upon her. But then, he only knew her as a confusing Shade-touched being. Why hadn’t she killed him yet? It would be simple. Carina was more than friendly upon their return, helping him heal over months and helping him recover his strength. He discovered that upon recovering his sanity, he had an affinity for reading the stars. And so, also encouraged by Carina, he joined the Nebulans, honing his strength by completing many missions, before retiring to be a simple strategist for the Nebulans. At this point, he and Carina were near inseparable. Despite taking the name of a simple astrologer, donning gorgeous starry silks, and using it as a convincing cover job, he still carries out investigations, hoping someday to meet Ghast. Astrology and therapy typically do not overlap; in Pyxis’s case, they unfortunately do. He’d encountered the Void Walkers when absolutely forced to cooperate with them, since if the Nebulans were morally bankrupt, then the Void Walkers were in an uncountable amount of moral debt. They were exactly what he expected — Shade-touched, reckless, emotionless, and murderous (or, in a certain case, all of these criteria). He noted their uneasy alliance, though — they wouldn’t hesitate to harm each other, but if one of the Void Walkers were harmed by any other being, they would spare no mercy. In a certain golden Guardian’s words, “I’m the only one allowed to thrash Taurus.” Pyxis was intrigued, to say the least; how, possibly, could such dragons feel any portion of attachment? His favorite subject, during that time period, would be the menacing and cold Imperial named Aqualia. He would ask her multiple questions, almost instantly regretting them, as her answers were more often than not horrifying. (“Would you murder any of the Void Walkers?” The answer to that was one Pyxis would like to forget.) Aqualia came to sarcastically call this therapy, and if it saved Pyxis from brutal death at her claws, he was happy to oblige. Nowadays, he does actually try to help Aqualia with her complex mind, and sometimes catches himself calling her a friend — only to correct himself quickly. Surely, Aqualia is still the emotionless husk of a dragon he once thought she was. |
