Biography

Runescorch the Magnificent
Firework Artiste
Chaotic Good

PkKAmaj.png
Everyone in the Starfall Isles knows the name of Runescorch the Magnificent. Most of them don't know who it belongs to, mind you, but when it's written in giant flaming letters against the night sky, it's hard to forget the name of the guy who ruined your stargazing. Who he is is a master of fireworks, an artist who paints pictures against the night sky and rains dazzling sparks from the heavens. He also does skywriting, if flaming sky letters are really how you want to get your message across.

Perhaps the advertising has created a few enemies, but nobody can deny Runescorch that it's got his name out there. And for a showman like him, that's what important. He can yell pretty loudly when he wants to, but getting attention on a crowded market street is a challenge for any fae. Ostensibly, he expects payment for his shows, but if there's enough spectators around he'll probably launch off a few rockets to show off. Sometimes this works out well, but other times it'll get him chased out of a clan for disturbing the peace, setting someone's house on fire, or just absolutely scaring the scales off the poor clan baker as they were innocently flying by.

Runescorch's performances are more than simply colourful sparklers, though. With much practice, he has honed his fire magic to be able to control the sparks in the sky from great range, detonating the rockets with a wave of his arms. But more than that, he can animate the blasts, shaping them to his every whim. Great mantarunes swim across the sky as he spins his cane, before bursting into a shower of glowing runes. He's a storyteller as well as an entertainer, with his longer shows illustrating famous stories from myth and legend, from the formation of the world in the First Age to the destruction of the Pillar of the World in the third. With significantly more fire and explosions, of course. And also just a little biased towards the Flamecaller, though it's not like anyone really knows what happened in those bygone eras.

But even if he's still loyal to his home flight, Runescorch has picked up the arcane flight's total lack of self-restraint. He would hate to be thought of as stagnant, or washed-up, so every show Runescorch puts on has to be bigger and better than the last. More powder, brighter colours, and most importantly, more magic. Sometimes even more realism! Before all he could do with that firework that explodes into a hydra made of fire was make it roar a little. But now it grows extra heads when the first ones fizzle out! What, you think that means the fire will never go out? No, no, Runescorch though of that. In fact, he's going to think about it some more over there, where you can't see him. Please ignore that nobody is controlling the animate firework now.

Perhaps the biggest reason why Runescorch always has more energy to further improve on his shows is that he doesn't make any of the fireworks himself. All he does is use his personality and magic to enhance the show. His assistant, Brynna, is the one who sources all the explosives and assembles the rockets. Runescorch usually enchants them a little bit beforehand, but she's the one who does most of the work. Since she doesn't participate in the shows, and thus the audience doesn't really know she exists, Runescorch often worries that Brynna doesn't feel appreciated. He offered to write her name up in the sky at the end of each show, but apparently she doesn't want the attention. So instead he makes sure to thank her profusely after each show. And also apologize after each show for whatever small amounts of chaos he's accidentally sown. Or any rockets that misfired in her direction.

Those living in Clan _______ get to enjoy and/or be annoyed by fireworks on many nights, as Runescorch uses a nearby island for testing. It's perfect for the job, being a totally barren rock with nothing that can catch fire. Other than the rest of the fireworks that are yet to be tested. Sometimes the first launch of the night is also the grand finale. Luckily for him, Runescorch is pretty fireproof. Brynna is less so, and has to take a late night swim in the ocean more often than she'd like.

Runescorch is a sociable dragon, and since most of his work is done at night, he spends the day making friends with the rest of the clan. Usually over a cup of Sadha's newest tea variety, expertly prepared by Lasciel. Still boiling as he drinks it, if possible.

Westerfield
A Mith of Many Words
Neutral Good

PkKAmaj.png
Lord Cornelius Westerfield the Fourth is the pen name of a mith who may or may not actually be named that. It's hard to say. He doesn't seem much like a lord, but also he's not offering up any alternatives. Regardless, Westerfield is a globe-trotting author who tends to tag along on Runescorch's fireworks cart. He can usually be found riding along with the barrels of powder in the back, letting Sornieth's vast and varied scenery inspire his writing. He also takes inspiration from the anxiety-ridden adrenaline rush of sitting atop a pile of explosives. Westerfield swears it does wonders for his motivation.

It's hard to believe he gets much writing done though, because Westerfield almost never stops talking. Travelling with him is like having the company of a tour guide, if that tour guide had no idea what they were talking about and were instead relaying half-remembered stories or outright making things up. It's good fun though, Westerfield has no issue with his travelling companions calling him out on his nonsense. Which Brynna does, all the time.

Westerfield's books haven't sold very far beyond beastclan circles, mostly because he hasn't translated any of them to common draconic. He does speak draconic, and can even write it, but he doesn't want to write the same book twice. It's simply too boring, that's all there is to it.

Westerfield never helps Runescorch with the preparations for his fireworks shows. He doesn't trust the fae not to light his fur on fire by mistake. Runescorch may be basically fireproof, but a mith sure isn't. He watches every show from the best vantage points though, and has only been set on fire by a misfire once.
