All of this happened because he followed Maals. Of course, each parent would be worried for their children, and those hearts would ache at the thought of separating, but little ones eventually need to find their own way in life. This was an unspoken law, but for some reason Soulseep decided to ignore it just this once. He prefers to think it wasn't his egoism but desire to help - he just conceded to pleas of his son. Maals was the only hatchling who stayed with Soulseep even after growing up, even after his mother left to serve the Earthshaker, and when all of his siblings followed her. And of course, one day, Soulseep's treasured child decided he should leave in search of a new place, too. But he refused to do so alone - and Soulseep had to confront those big, naive, sparkling eyes, which were begging to go together. Soulseep felt slightly anxious agreeing, suspecting this might affect the natural course of live of a mature dragon his son now was. Putting that aside, some clans could just refuse accepting them both, or they might get separated during their journey. But still, he couldn't refuse - Maals was beseeching quite earnestly. It felt like a sick joke, as everything turned out just like Soulseep feared it would. At the borders of the Starfall Isles they got attacked by a flock of angered Pearlcatchers, probably territorial, and Soulseep lost sight of his child, fenced off the Starwood Strand all alone. As he couldn't let this slide, Soulseep settled down at the Observatory, with the clan named the Temple of Soul, temporarily. This big clan accepted him while he was searching for Maals around the area. It didn't take long - his son found him first. But he was completely different dragon now - way more mature, confident, harsh... dangerous. What happened to whom he once was? Softspoken and honest child was gone. Maals declared he found his new home - and that he didn't need his father near him anymore. Soulseep, of course, knew this would eventually happen, but this change was too sudden. Too unnatural. His son seemed nervous, too - he was fidgeting and scratching himself way too much, as if his body felt like a burden to him - Soulseep found this thought horrifying. Making it clear that no one should look for him anymore, Maals disappeared. Soulseep was too concerned with his son's mental state and erratic behavior to ask him anything or to enforce him - but this meeting didn't bring him relief at all. Was all of this his fault? He decided to stay at the Observatory and investigate, but it seemed all the hunters and gatherers were sure that the Starwood Strand was untrodden. Majority of areas was covered with thick fog, too - living there seemed to be harsh and unsafe. While pondering if he should just accept all of this, Soulseep helps with chores as indemnity for letting him stay - as a Nature dragon, he knows a lot about plants and grains, therefore controlling parameters of soil for young growth. Sometimes he is seen praying for storms during long droughts and harsh solstice. He helps with reaping as well - maybe he does that to drive out his fear and anxiety, but Soulseep takes on a lot of things, and is known as very hardworking and dependable. While he does what he can for others and often neglects himself, he never forgets his true goal - to uncover who or what kidnapped and changed his dear son. |
