Shard found his calling pursuing the study of and carving of gemstones and rocks. He works in jeweling and masonry by day and stays up late into the evening, reading and researching. He can often be found travelling, selling jewelry and searching for new knowledge from the dragons he meets.

"The name Sapphire derives from Greek "sappheiros" - blue. In antiquity, any blue stone such as lazurite, was called Sapphire. At first only the blue variety was called Sapphire. Today corundums of gemstone quality of all colours except red are called Sapphire. The most desired colour is a pure cornflower-blue."

"The name Citrine is derived from its lemon yellow colour.
Citrine is sometimes very pale or almost colourless. Among deeper coloured stones may be seen wine-yellow, honey-yellow, and saffron-yellow specimens, while others have quite a pronounced brown tinge. Stones of a deep brownish-yellow colour are very similar to topaz."

"Ruby is a pink to blood-red coloured gem variety of the mineral Corundum. The name comes from the Latin word "ruber" - red. The red colour can vary within each individual deposit, therefore the determination of the source from the colour is not possible. The red colour is caused by chromium, and in case of brownish tones due to presence of iron."

"The name emerald derives from Greek "smaragdos" - green stone. It is the most precious stone in the beryl group. Its green is incomparable, and is therefore called "emerald green". Emerald is highly evaluated for its deep bright green colour, transparency and rather high hardness. It has maintained, along with diamond and ruby, the dominant position among gemstones since ancient times."

____Shard was raised in the Star Wood Strand, an enchanting and beautiful place, alongside many siblings. It was there, among the winking, hazily glowing flowers that bloomed in the darkness where he first found his calling. He would stare at the blooms for hours on end instead of sleeping, watching them. They reminded him of the gemstones he'd only read about in books and scrolls, the heavy kinds his father would bring back from the Tourmaline Archives, the ones that smelled of dust and knowledge.

____He read all sorts of things about crystals and gems and stones in those books. They fascinated him, and he was determined to find out all he could about the glittering things the books told him were buried in the earth. Shard was enchanted by the idea that things so beautiful could be formed in the ground and fashioned into jewelry, decoration, even weapons. The thought that something so priceless could be used to both adorn and to bring harm, and so many other things... it was stunning.

____As Shard grew older, he struck out on his own, moving to study in the Astrolodome. He kept in close touch with his father for a while, before eventually the two faded slowly out of touch. Along with his continued research in the sphere, Shard opened up a small shop. It sold jewelry that he had made with his own talons, and funded his ongoing research as he began to dabble in masonry. He found this more dull at first, but it still drew him just as much as the gemstones had.

____His shop could not sustain him alone, however, and eventually, Shard was forced to close it down. He yet looked ahead,, seeking to continue his studies among the Earth dragons, and beginning a trek to the Dragonhome. Once there, he settled into the Colonnades of Antiquity, finding work with his newfound skills as a stonemason. It was lonely, and the Dragonhome was far from the Starfall Isles, but he was still able to keep up his studies, and the Earth dragons provided a wealth of knowledge.

____When at last he returned to the Isles, Shard brought with him beautiful gems and stone carvings alike. He reopened his shop, this time remaining fully in the Crystalspine Reaches. Occassionally, he would visit his old home back in the Star Wood Strand. The flowers that drew him to throw himself into his studies remained, and brought a nostalgic light that was at once comforting and somehow mournful. Nowadays, he travels all across Sornieth, selling his wares and always seeking more knowledge.

"Topaz is named from Greek "topazion" for a type of gemstone, probably after Sanskrit "tapas" - fire, alluding to the brilliance of gem-quality material. Topaz has been known from antiquity. Topaz occurs in a broad colour change: red, pink, purple, yellow, orange, brown, blue, green, colorless. Imperial Topaz is the most valuable. Red and pink topaz crystals are also rare and highly prized."

"Quartz (named after a Slavic word for "hard") is the most common mineral found on the surface of the earth. A significant component of many igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, this natural form of silicon dioxide is found in an impressive range of varieties and colours."

"Obsidian was so named from its resemblance to a stone found in Ethiopia by Obsius. It was used in antiquity for amulets and necklaces. Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass. It is usually an opaque black or grey but may be yellow, red, greenish brown. Obsidian may have an iridescent sheen caused by inclusions."

"Garnet is extensively used as a gem. The name is said to have been derived from the colour of the gem varieties, red garnets having been compared to the flowers and seeds of the pomegranate-tree. The most common colour of Garnet is red, the most usual tones being tinged with brown, yellow and violet. Blue is a colour conspicuous by its complete absence in the garnet group."
