Biography
Charisse
In her early days, Charisse grew up near the Source and never wandered too far away from it. She overheard folks talking about the wanderers who traveled through the Highland Scrubs, which is a dusty steppe deficient in food and drink. Apparently, some of them never made it back from their travels.
With her love of sand, tea, pastries, and cacti, Charisse decided she was going to do something crazy. She was going to open a shop in that wasteland, giving refreshments and shelter to those who needed it. She was going to leave the Source to pursue a new career. And so she did.
Charisse, a Fae large for her species' size, owns and runs a cafe in the Lightning territory. Day by day, she sells tea and small snacks to any who pass by. She's great at chatting with any who wander through the sun-baked Highland Scrubs and frequently offers them a place to stay. Often, she's surprised by how many dragons come through the area. Amiable and talkative, this dragon has managed to give many lifelong wanderers a permanent home.
Charisse lives with her mate, Charlie, who was the first dragon she ever provided a home to. The two founded a clan together, accepting into it Prelude, a mage, after he saved their lives. These three formed the Shaderuin Trinity. Soon after, they accepted Kelth, a renowned warrior, as well. He guards the group and trains them for battle. Together, these dragons form the basis of the clan and help manage the cafe.
The night was peacefully quiet. Outside the window, the moon was just a claw scratch in the sky. The crackle of flames burning within the lamps gave a warm, friendly feel to the kitchen as Charisse worked, cleaning up after a pretty busy day at the shop. She only had to wash some dishes and clean up the counter, then she'd be finished for the night.
A heavy yet dull thump fractured the silence like an explosion. She immediately set down the utensils she was cleaning. Unnerved, she grabbed a lantern from the counter. Pulling a sharpened stick off the wall, Charisse breathed in deeply and crept out the front door.
She peered around nervously, trying to identify where the noise came from. Dragons didn't usually come out here at night. Her eyes caught on a hulk of shadows far to her right, which she identified as the massive form of a Guardian in a heap on the ground. All was quiet. Nothing moved except the unconscious dragon's faint breathing.
Warily, she inched towards the Guardian. As she neared, the lantern cast light across his body. She could see that his haunches and tail were bleeding. He looked extremely worn, as if he'd been wandering for days without food. He was dressed in armor and rags, with several bags attached to a belt around his waist.
Assuming he was a wanderer who'd had more difficult travels, she hurried inside, propping the stick up where it belonged. She warmed up a bowl of soup. With the bowl in one hand and a cup of water in the other, she ran back out to the dragon. She then set the bowl of soup in front of his face, hoping to rouse him with the scent of food. After she'd waited for several minutes and he didn't wake, Charisse decided to splash water in his face. To her surprise, he recoiled quickly, and she jumped back. His movement almost knocked over the bowl of soup, which his gaze landed on hungrily. He contemplated it, then eyed her warily. "Is it poisoned?" he asked. Charisse shook her head, afraid to speak. He apparently chose to trust her, because he ravenously shoved his snout into the bowl. After a little while, he removed his face from the dish and said kindly to Charisse, "This is good soup. Thank you. And who might you be?"
Although she's larger than most of her kind, Charisse doesn't always strike everyone as a warrior. Nonetheless, she trains vigorously for battle in apprenticeship to a renowned and wise warrior, Kelth, almost nightly. Both Charisse and Charlie train alongside each other, usually practicing against Kelth or hunting.
Part of the reason she does this is to build up strength. Even around her abode, the wasteland is a rough place, despite its so-called 'docility.' She needs to have the strength to combat the climate and lack of sustenance in the highlands. Additionally, most travellers are tough and could pose a threat. "It's always helpful to know how to defend yourself," she frequently says. But in reality, she is training because she is being hunted down. More specifically, she and her mate are. Why? She doesn't know. She’d asked Charlie on multiple occasions, but he refused to explain anything. He only explained that he was trying to protect her and himself; that it was safer that she didn't know. The only information that she is certain of is that those five dragons want Charlie and her dead.
