Biography

done i love him sm

shhhh what do you mean lightning eyes

pssst- one character's name is missing as XDD. please fix that sometime

It was very cold when he came back to consciousness.

He remembered little. He remembered breathing, having a warmth in his chest, the general feeling of being alive and a person and…

What was he now? He couldn’t move, and there was something in the back of his head whispering things he did not really want to remember.

For somebody who hasn’t even been born yet, he has a lot of memories. Most of them were of people he does not recognize (why did he feel so bad about that?), scattered drops of blood, and an overwhelming sense of pain.

It was enough to make the young dragon feel as if he had died, when in truth this was the first time his eyes would hit the air. But at the same time, something told him that he had lived before.

When the stone around him finally cracked, the only thing he felt was absolute sorrow and the feeling that he had lost something. Something very, very important.

He held a claw up to his face, putting it over his eye- he wasn’t really sure why he checked, as none of the dragons emerging from the caverns had any physical injuries. They asked questions, wondered what the dragons in front of them were, and mused about some deity that had created their lives. We owe the lives of the Obelisk clan to the Earthshaker. One whispered, the others following suit. The Earthshaker was a god to them- somebody who, from their whispers, had spoken to them all.

He had never heard the voice of their god. He didn’t even know if Earthshaker had any meaning to him.

He wondered who he really was, taking over the body of this dragon who was a real child of their deity…

What am I even thinking? I’ve been born with the others, I’m a sibling of the clan, Earthshaker is my god the same as he is theirs!

Something felt wrong to him.

He flew out with the rest of the dragons, and this really was the first time he felt air grace his wings. He had to remind himself that he has always had wings, and that he had never lived without them. Why did everything feel strange to him, as if he wasn’t part of the dragons he had been created with, that he was some sort of stranger in the group…

He flew a bit closer to the dragon to his left, a grapefruit-colored female who seemed rather focused on the task at hand- although he noticed her wings wobbling much less than his own did.

“We’re free.” he whispered, spreading his wings out flat to catch the air, following the trail of the Obelisk in front of him.

“That we are.” she said, and for a moment he believed that was all he would be getting from her. “It feels like such a short time since we heard the summons!”

“Yes.” he said, mustering up the courage to speak- “have you felt strange since you got here, by any chance?”

“Hm? No- the Earthshaker made all of us together. The world is new, but our gods have our backs, and nothing can harm us!”

She clenched her claws, and he flew back to his original position. No use messing with her.

Where were they heading? The flock was scattering, the din of their roars fading out, moving everywhere across the nation and planet and wherever they were. He looked around for the grapefruit dragon, then anybody familiar, then anybody at all as the group scattered.

We’re starting new lives! Just go anywhere. It doesn’t matter.

He had so many ideas jump into his head, but with the feeling that none of them actually existed.

He had been flying for hours, and the wonder of it had finally worn off. Fingers pointed upwards at him, the news of their appearances already spreading- and this bamboo field didn’t seem to miss a thing. The long, noodle-like dragons that lived there had already taken an interest in him, none of them speaking but following after him with interested eyes. The instant he looked back at them, they spiraled back down to the ground with more murmurs and conversation.

It reminded him of something, but he wasn’t sure what.

The bamboo fields stretched on for what seemed like forever. Windy and cold- but not as cold as the stone he had woken in was. Even the chill getting under his mane and scales didn’t strike him as deeply as the stone. He stretched his body out, letting the wind move sweat off his scales, feeling good about things.

He picked up clothing at one of the many little shops that existed by a group of windmills. On the way there he picked up a white katana- an elegant weapon, felt nice in the paw. He didn’t understand what drew him to it, nor why he already knew the basic stance for it.
The shopkeeper, a shifty-looking frilled dragon, leaned their claws across the table as they spoke to him.

“It’ll cost you a good amount of gems most of the time- but for something as interesting as you, I’m happy with just the bragging rights that I’ve seen ‘ya.”

“Well, that’s enough for me. I don’t have much in the way of money at the moment.”

“Well, of course you don’t. Just got here, eh?”

In more ways than one, he thought, before wondering what he meant by that.

“I have.” He picked the weapon off the table, examining the belt and wondering how he would clip it to his waist.

“You know how to use one of those? It’s really not as simple as it looks.”

“I think so?”

The shopkeeper tossed a piece of wood into the air, and the Obelisk was pleasantly surprised when he nimbly swung the sword and cleaved the thing in half.

“Well, you’re good.” the shopkeeper said, a bit surprised that a dragon so young by the laws of Sornieth already had that level of prowess. At the same time the Obelisk himself didn’t know how he did that- he had never touched this before, were all Obelisks a prodigy at something?

“Take it. I see it’s in good hands.” The smile on his face gave off the hint that he may be trying to sell the wood piece soon.

This is about the time when he tried to remember his name. Did the Earthshaker name his children, or did they all pick their own?

A name leapt to his head, but it didn’t feel dragony to him, and so he kept thinking of stuff he could call himself.

Grr grr rawr! No… I don’t think they have names like that. Earthbringer? No…

He should know this stuff, right? How didn’t he know what names dragons used? He was one, and his fellows seemed comfortable enough…

This is just because you’re new. These are your first hours! Nothing is actually wrong at all- all of us just came out!

Never mind all the...weird memories. The faces. The voices. The smell of blood-

You are a perfectly normal Obelisk dragon, born from the Earthshaker, created for the protection of all who need you…

He had strange thoughts, about protecting people, and successes, and failures, and the same feelings of pain he had when he was in that stone- faces watching him, depending on him, and an overwhelming feeling that there was somebody he could not save.

Who was it? A friend, a child? Why were these thoughts in his head- had he been another dragon once, a friend, an enemy, somebody who hurt people or somebody who was hurt? Why was he here?

YOU ARE A PERFECTLY NORMAL OBELISK DRAGON AND THESE ARE NOT THINGS YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT.

He did not realize he had landed until he felt his claws dig into grass, and his eyes flitted over to a stream winding its way across the stalks of bamboo. The land rose upwards, far into the sky- maybe from there, he would find a good point to look from. A place to go. Better than the horrifying whirlwind he had seen in the distance, anyway.

His wings brought him fast and far before, but he was tired now, and instead started walking on the ground at a quick pace. He dipped his nose into the water, lapping up the delightful taste of it, before washing off a paw and looking at himself in the reflection of the streams. He was...a strange maned creature, eyes a delightful blue shade and scales much darker than the bright red of his mane. He poked a paw into the visage, watching it flicker, before sitting up with a sigh and getting back to walking.

Waverider, the young Spiral leader of a local clan, had only been out to gather mushrooms and maybe the news of the day- the cries of new dragon, new dragon! The dig in Earth has finished! The children of the earth are free! Had been yelling in his ears this whole time, a din of good news and cries of interest and joy. Who would be the first to get one in their clans? What were they like? Were they excitable like Spirals (well, like what dragons thought of Spirals) or elegant like a Skydancer, or monotone like a Fae was? He did want to know, but he also knew that unless one of them had the strange quality his clan was known for, they would never come here.

After all, if the Earthshaker made all the Obelisks, then none of them would end up strange like his unless they had hatchlings already, and one of those...the chance was so low that he wouldn’t entertain it. Admittedly he did wish to see one, but his claws were already so full with work on the new dragons and how some of them couldn’t stop starting fights…
This is why he was so surprised when an Obelisk poked their catlike nose through the trees, watching him gather up plants.

“Oh.” Waverider said, hopping back onto all four legs and slinging his bounty over his shoulder into a bag he had brought for this exact reason. “Hello there.”

“Ah-” he had such a nice voice- “sorry, am I interrupting something?”

“Oh no, not at all! Actually, I was just thinking about you guys- came all the way from Earth, did you?”

“That’s right.”

“Hah! At Wind already! You guys must be pretty fast to get here in such a short time!”

He noted the size of the dragon- large, but not significantly taller than many of the others he knew. They were still taller than him even on his hind legs, but that could be explained by the general size of Spirals. He never liked feeling this short.

“I suppose we do. I did get tired after a while- but if this is your land, I’ll get out as soon as I can.”

“I don’t mind- we take in a lot of dragons, and really, I can deal with anybody at this point!”

He gave the noodle-dragon a small nod of his head, feeling terrible about the whole thing. Something told him that he was not normally the sort of person to feel this way.

“Well...that is nice of you. But I should be fine- just need to walk around, think about some stuff-”

“Do you have a name?” The question came almost out of nowhere, but as he thought about it he realized that it was a natural thing to ask.

“Do you?” he asked back, hoping that he could think of a name- or admit he didn’t have one. The same name from before leapt into his mind, but he was still thinking that over.

“Waverider.” they said, giving the newcomer a nod of his head- “Strange name for a Wind dragon, I know. But you’re new here, you shouldn’t mind a weird name, eh?”

“Not at all.” He fidgeted with his claws.

A small pause in the conversation- it took him a while to realize that Waverider was asking for his name, and that he hadn’t yet given it.

“I guess you can come back with me for a bit.” Waverider eventually said, just as the red-maned dragon opened his jaws to admit his namelessness. “We have space- and you’ll probably need food, some time to rest.”

“That’s...the nicest thing I’ve heard so far. Thank you.”

Waverider smiled, before hopping off, the bag of plants on his back wiggling as he moved.

“I do have some warnings for you.”

“What?”

“Our dragons are...weird. Not what their breeds are usually like, and they talk weird, speak about people they don’t even remember much about... “

“I see.” It should not have reminded him of himself as much as it did.

“A few tips. If somebody wants to be left alone, do so. Bright is actually immortal and do not fall for his tricks. He’s harmless...I think. We’ve got a guy fighting everybody that agrees to a duel. He won’t hurt you, or kill you, at least he hasn’t yet. But he usually wins and please be fine with that. Then we have Wind- he will point an arrow at you…”

He went on and on, about all the dragons they had and what weird shenanigans they got up to, stories of what some had done and be careful for that, and don’t fall into the fountain, and a bunch of other stuff…

They got to the camp a while later, a small, well manicured clearing among the bamboo and grasses and other foliage that surrounded their small home. A set of dens laid among fountains, in a half circle on each side- and it was immensely tempting to step into the cool-looking fountain water.

A few dragons looked towards him when he appeared. Some waved, some pointed and spoke to nearby friends, and some didn’t seem to care much about him being there. The two who seemed most interested were at a makeshift bar near the front, sipping from unidentifiable drinks that he doubted had any real alcohol content. (It was fruit punch, but they were getting their fun out of drinking it like it was legit stuff.) The bird-dragon of them, a strangely familiar face- he had never seen a bird-dragon, had he? turned towards him, before saying something to the underweight black dragon at their side. The two of them were shifty, suspicious as all could be, and he didn’t like the way their eyes looked.

The bird-dragon took a sip of his fruit punch. “New guy, eh?”

“New guy.” Waverider answered. “Possibly a traveler. Staying her for some time.”
Another sip of the red juice, with the black dragon at his side chewing on the lemon it came with. “Looks like a dude I knew once.”

“He literally just came out of the ground. You can’t have met him.”

“Well, I know this lovely idiot right here-” he gave the black dragon a tap on the head- “against all odds.”

“It’s...different. He just came out of the GROUND.”

“Does look familiar.” the black dragon mused, a dreamlike quality to their breathy voice, before they went back to nibbling the poor lemon.

Waverider sighed, shrugging before walking over and grabbing his own cup of the fruit juice. “Well, make yourself at home. And ignore these two- they’re not really troublemakers, but they can get...strange.

Do NOT leave me alone with the weird blue guy. He thought, but wasn’t going to dare say that out loud.

The blue dragon sighed, holding his beak with his claws, running them along the length of his snout.

“Gotta test it. Your name’s not Kyojuro, by any chance?”

He froze. The exact name he’s had in his head all this time…?

“How do you-”

“Wait, seriously? That’s your name.”

It feels right. Why does it feel right?

Why do I have an intense hatred for this guy despite just now meeting him?

“Maybe you don’t remember fully? Could be because, well, you’re alive and I killed you, last I checked.”

???

“I should not have mentioned that.”

??????????????

“You, uh...if you’re the same person. It’s weird, and honestly I get why you’re confused right now-”

??????????????????????

“I am not the guy you ask for help, but-”

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? times a million, because he is very confused

“You uh. Should stay here. Because you will remember that stuff as I did, and then! I can fight you, and it’ll be FUN AS HECK-”

“I do not understand a word you are saying.” he eventually managed to cough out, holding his paws to his head- “except that you know more about me than I do myself, somehow.”

“It happens.”

“Where’s the noodle guy? I got to ask him-” But then he saw Waverider across the clearing, and he dashed over with a hop of wings.

“So...every dragon here remembers stuff like that.”

The two of them had been talking for a while now, Waverider doing his best to explain the clan’s workings- and it didn’t take long for the Spiral to realize that emerging from the earth was not a way to escape from the transfer of consciousness the clan was known for.

“Pretty much every one. They tend to come here- either running across us, or knowing somebody here. I guess something about the spot tends to draw ‘em.”

“I...and I may be one of these.”

“XDD guessed your name, didn’t he?”

“Yes.”

“Is he familiar in any way?”

“Uncomfortably so.”

“Then… I would recommend staying here. But oh! It’s not a forced thing- you can stick around if you want, but we’ve had some dragons preferring to live their own lives, or serve a deity-

“I knew I didn’t belong with the Obelisk clan.” he sighed. “I… guess there is something I lost.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for.”

“I just...feel bad.” Waverider admitted. “At least some of us here know others- ask around, find somebody you like? I know that XDD found a friend, or...whatever they are. Maybe you know somebody.”

“Thank you, Waverider. I do hope I’m not overextending my hospitality?”

“No, not at all- I’m used to this. You’re free to pick any open spots you see, really- and even if you don’t have stuff to put in there, we have some stuff for you.”

He wasn’t again going to comment about Waverider’s hospitality towards him. He was too busy thinking, walking out after shaking the noodle- a Spiral-’s claw, stepping back and trying to draw up those memories he had spent the last bit of his life trying to repress.

He guessed he wouldn’t be part of the Obelisk clan, but he did want to remember his old clan- and maybe part of this one.

Oh, and maybe take his revenge. Somehow.
