Some dragons wonder if ice flows through Jokull’s veins, the same way they wonder about Finn. The two dragons are brothers, so it makes sense that they share similar traits. Despite their shared characteristics, Jokull has very little love in his heart for Finn. As the younger of the two, he constantly feels usurped by his more popular sibling. He feels that Finn does not deserve all the prowess and praise he has received from other dragons. The two are constantly at odds, competing with one another to see who’s best at combat, thieving, and general debauchery. Jokull always loses. He hates it. As an assassin, he tends to take out his rage on his targets. A quick, clean kill always calms him down. Physical wounds scar and heal, but the deep emotional gash caused by abandonment continues to bleed and fester. Yes, Jokull resents Finn. Finn on the other hand doesn’t seem to care at all. This only enrages Jokull further. There seems to be very little hope for resolution between the two brothers. If only they could figure out how to talk to each other.
Deep down, Jokull wishes that Finn would show him the same amount of care he shows his clanmates. He’s especially jealous of Finn’s relationship with Amias. The pink glittering dragon takes up most of Finn’s time and attention. This causes Jokull to lash out, usually in the form taking on indescribably difficult assassination commissions or destroying something that Finn loves. Destruction leads to fights, and fights lead to bruises. The perpetual cycle refreshes itself rather frequently. Jokull wonders if he and Finn will ever truly become brothers by more than just blood. He longs for the kind of companionship Finn has achieved. He dreams about what it might feel like to feel loved and accepted. When he wakes, it is with more fury in his heart than ever before. Jokull is a complicated creature and Finn is far too aloof to give him the attention he desires. For this, Jokull will never forgive him.
When he isn’t completing an assassination, brooding, or fighting with Finn, Jokull spends much of his time alone. He sets up target practice all throughout the citadel, creating increasingly more difficult obstacle courses for himself. His aim is uncanny. He hasn’t missed a shot since he was very small. Once, Jokull strapped a paper target to a large bird and spent the evening chasing after the creature, hitting it repeatedly with arrows. He often paints Finn’s face on the targets he’s aiming for. Finn has witnessed this once or twice and, as usual, seems indifferent to his brother’s actions. Jokull shrugs it off. He’s used to receiving the cold shoulder from his only family member.
Jokull does have one neutral, if not positive, memory of Finn. The two of them were hatchlings playing separately from each other in a grassy field. Jokull was making a tower out of sticks. He was very proud of it and was just getting ready to show Finn when a strong breeze blew past and knocked it over. The younger dragon began to cry. Finn eventually ambled over to see what was going on. He saw the pile of sticks, shrugged, and set it on fire. At first, this made Jokull cry harder. Then, Finn threw a strange powder into the flames that he’d nicked from a shopper in the marketplace. The powder transformed the fire from orange to green to blue to pink. Every color of the rainbow flashed before Jokull’s eyes.
“Stop crying,” Finn deadpanned, “and look at the fire.”
The little hatchling obeyed. The two of them watched the flames dance, the flickers reflecting in their sullen eyes. They’d always had a rough life. If only they would’ve stuck it out together.
