Biography
The Mercenary
Ran was born along the border between the Arcane isles and the Plaguelands. She was always drawn to a life of trickery and crime, stealing and killing her way through the world. She was somewhat infamous for her brutality towards her targets, but was also known to protect those who showed her kindness. She was always obsessed with knives and other sharp objects, and refused to fight with anything else. Though tough and well-prepared, she was always bound to get into a situation above her abilities.
She was cornered one day by a target she had failed to kill, and he was gaining the upper hand. Her entire life spent fighting in the dark alleys of the world was not enough against his brute strength. She was thrown to the ground, and thought for sure she was done for. Instead of the darkness she expected, there was a burst of violet light. A fae mage stood in front of her, lavender cape floating around him, fins flared in anger. A circle of runes stood between him and her former target, who was suddenly hurled through the air at incredible speed. The mage turned around and offered Ran a hand up, eyes still glowing from magic, with a perfectly blank expression.
This is how Ran and Tarnse met, and how they accidentally started a clan of interdimensional travelers and shapeshifters. Though Tarnse spoke in a perfect monotone and showed little to no facial expression, Ran quickly learned to read him and the two became good friends, and partners in crime. They wandered around together and eventually settled in the Starfall Isles, in the magical forest called the Starwood Strand.
They had picked up some strange people along the way, but they were interesting and that was a good enough reason for Ran to want to keep them around. Neither of the newly appointed clan leaders realized that the area they chose was a weak point between dimensions, but by the time all the odd futuristic people had come through it was too late to go back. Their clan remained somewhat nomadic in that its members spread out over a wide area, but they are all under Ran's protection and leadership, with Tarnse as her second in command.
Most members of the clan do not trust Ran to be kind or merciful, but they do know that she would not betray those who follow her. She is a fair leader, all in all, though she does not always act in the clan's best interest. She tends to fight for the thrill of it more than anything else, and will attack any intruders for fun. Sometimes she will let them join the clan, if they prove their worth to her through strength, magic, or wealth. Though she is on the whole a self-centered person, she cares deeply about the people close to her, who she considers to be her family.
