Biography
Prelude could feel the suffering. Somewhere nearby, two dragons were in serious danger. His intuition had previously told him to come here, to this forest, to help somebody. Now, in the presence of this pain, he could tell it wasn't just to help. It was to save. Whoever was here was about to die.
Standing at the edge of the forest, he peered into its depths. He couldn't see anybody. Hurriedly trotting into the woods, Prelude analyzed his surroundings, looking for the dragons, trying to follow his ever-increasing awareness of someone else's agony.
Finally, he spotted two dragons limp on the ground. One, a Guardian, was breathing ruggedly. With a lurch of the gut, Prelude realized that the dragon was bleeding. The other, a rather large Fae, was almost motionless beside him.
A blue Skydancer emerged from the woods with a healing potion in one hand and a leather bag in the other. Setting the pouch down, he poured the potion on the dying Guardian's wounds. It seemed to close up a little, but it barely helped.
Prelude flew over to them, landing several feet away from the group. Turning towards him, the Skydancer growled and stood defensively between Prelude and the two injured dragons.
"I am a mage. Let me help them," Prelude addressed the dragon. The warrior's gaze barely softened. "Fine," he growled, backing away. Prelude walked over to heal the pair of dragons and felt the Skydancer's gaze burning into his back as he worked. He used a mix of Regeneration and Aid to bring both dragons back to nearly full health.
The Guardian lifted his head slowly, blinking at Prelude and the Skydancer. He looked between the two dragons, then directed his gaze at the warrior. "Kelth, who…?"
"Don't know. He healed you both," Kelth replied, pushing the sack he'd brought back earlier towards him. The Guardian opened it and Prelude realized it held an assortment of dead grasshoppers and beetles. "Lunch," Kelth grunted briskly.
At the scent of food, the Fae who had been wounded shifted and sniffed the air. The Guardian nuzzled her gently and she perked up, eyes landing on the bag. "Charlie, what happened?" she asked. "Those Serthis beat us up real good, Charisse. This Fae…" Charlie looked towards Prelude. "I didn't catch your name?"
"Prelude," he replied with a reserved smile.
"Prelude healed us." Charlie nodded towards the mage. "Thank you," he said. Charisse nodded insistently in agreement. "Yes, thank you." She then said more quietly, "I don't like being hurt," and dug her talons into the bag of bugs.
Dipping his head, the starry-winged Fae replied, "Glad I could be of assistance."
Over the next few weeks, Prelude learned a lot of things about these dragons. He learned they were the founders of a small clan and assisted in rebuilding their home. He learned that Kelth was their trainer and had brought them on a mission that didn't end too well, and that's where Prelude had found them. He also learned that Charlie and Charisse were being hunted down by five bloodthirsty dragons who had caused the destruction at their home.
They also learned a lot of things about him. He had been taught magic by his parents and had three younger siblings. Not only did he have healing powers, but he also had battle magic and the ability to sense certain things. Usually, those things involved fate or pain.
Prelude loved helping others, so he decided to stick around even after their lair was rebuilt, joining their clan. Prelude, Charisse, and Charlie formed the Shaderuin Trinity, the lead dragons of the clan. Soon after, they convinced Kelth to join their clan as well.
Something was wrong. Back at the cafe, something was going on. His siblings. His siblings were in danger. Those five dragons. They were coming towards Prelude's younger siblings. The Faes cowered away from the imposing Mirror and his cohorts, all of which had their claws drawn. The lead dragon snarled something to them, but Prelude couldn't hear it. The whole situation was silent.
Prelude jolted out of his sleep, gasping. He had to go back to the cafe, now. He had to ditch the hunting plans, ditch the training. His siblings were about to get killed, tortured, or held captive as leverage by those monsters. Standing up, the dragon walked over to Kelth's sleeping form. "Kelth," he barked, shaking the dragon's talons roughly. The Skydancer let out a threatening growl and glared down at the Fae, but when he saw it was just Prelude his gaze softened. "What? It's the middle of the night."
"I know. We have to go back to the cafe. The five might be there now. And if they're not, they will be soon."
Kelth nodded, rising to his feet and padding over to Charlie and Charisse, who were both snoring. "Get up," he said to the two of them. They didn't move. "Now," he said more sternly. Charlie groaned. "What?" he asked, almost in a complaining tone. "We need to go back. Let's go." Charlie stood up, nudging Charisse into wakefulness. "Seems urgent," he muttered softly to her.
Prelude trotted to them. "My siblings are in danger. By the time we get there, the five will most likely have arrived. We better hurry."
