Biography
Straton
Hello? Sorry, I'm not much of a talker.
Pearlcatchers have a reputation for being vain, gossipy, and concerned with keeping out of fights. Straton surprises those who expect that of him. But then, he's a surprise in a lot of ways. He surprises those who think that the quiet pearlcatcher would be more talkative like the rest of his kind, or that the warrior would be the sort of dragon to be scared of fights as other pearlcatchers are. His choice in mates surprises those who wonder what attracted the reticent pearlcatcher to StormChaser, a theatrical ridgeback. And those who knew him as a hatchling would certainly be surprised to see him as he is now.
When Straton hatched, he was the smallest of his siblings, who teased him for being a runt. He seemed to catch a cold every week, and if there was some bug running through the lair, Straton was sure to catch it no matter how carefully his parents kept him away from it. In the ordinary rough and tumble hatchling play, Straton would always get scrapes and bruises worse than his playmates. His appetite was poor, and he never seemed to eat as much as his siblings, despite his mother urging him to eat just a few more bites so he could grow up big and strong. The heat of the Ashfall Waste was exhausting for him, and all the smoke and ash in the air gave him a constant wheezing cough.
Straton surprised everyone, the first surprise of many, when he reached adolescence and announced his decision to leave, and seek his own clan. His family was worried about him. He wasn't a strong flier, or strong at all. What if he was attacked and hurt? What if he got lost? What if he fell ill in the wilderness with no one around to help? But Straton was insistent that this was his choice. So, reluctant as they were, his clan outfitted him to travel, gave him all their best wishes, advice, and warnings, and wished him farewell. Straton had a destination in mind, but more than that, he wanted to fend for himself for the first time in his life. So he spread his wings and set out for the neighboring region of the Windswept Plateau.
The journey there was difficult. He was still weak, unaccustomed to long flights because his old clan had never let him go on them, fearing he might hurt himself. He had to learn how to pace himself, to conserve energy by soaring on the thermals, and when to admit to himself that he needed to rest. When there was danger, he often had to flee or hide, and he gained several hard-won lessons in fighting, another thing his old clan had kept him away from, when he could do neither. Little by little, however, he grew stronger on the journey, until he reached the Windswept Plateau. He landed on one of their rolling green hills, on wings stronger from his weeks of flight, and for the first time in his life took in a deep breath of clean air, untouched by the constant volcanic smoke. He knew that this was where he wanted to stay.
He journeyed until he found a small clan, still in the process of growing to its full strength. He felt a kinship with them, since he too was still growing to his own full strength. Joining a larger, more well-established clan would have been safer for him, but he didn't want to allow others to guide him down a safe but uneventful path anymore. Since he had left his old clan, his pearl, once small from few memories worth recording, had grown in size with layer upon layer of exciting, dangerous, and pleasant memories from his travels. He felt that this clan was one that would be worth creating new memories with. When he introduced himself, he learned that the clan's leader, Nocti, was off communicating with the Windsinger on their behalf. But he met two guardians, Cheyanne and Chrono, who had taken up the mantle of temporary leaders, and they welcomed him into the clan on her behalf.
Straton surprised his new clan yet again when he asked Chrono and Cheyanne if they would give him a warrior's training. He was stronger than the small and sickly pearlcatcher he had been back in his old clan, but he was still somewhat delicate. However, he couldn't have asked for better mentors. Chrono and Cheyanne's charge was the clan, and every dragon in it. They both recognized that holding Straton back from his dream would be unkind, and not in line with their need to take care of the clan, but they also knew that they couldn't push him too hard too fast. They taught him slowly, helping him build up his strength, and making him rest when he got out of breath.
Straton slowly but surely grew into a strong warrior. Although pearlcatchers are on the smaller side, he learned to fight with speed and agility, striking blows where it counted most. If he couldn't triumph through sheer force like the larger guardians, he didn't need to. He thought as much as he fought, searching for weak points and openings, and refining his strategy with every battle. Anyone who underestimated him because he was small soon learned their mistake. Although he wouldn't ever be the largest dragon in the lair, nor the one with the most raw strength, through time and careful training he became one of its most accomplished fighters. Straton was happy to devote himself to helping build his growing clan, and helping defend them.
Then, one day, their leader Nocti returned from her travels, bringing with her a new clan member, a ridgeback named StormChaser, and Straton surprised the clan again. They had all known him as a quiet, reserved type. He wasn't unfriendly, but he did seem to enjoy solitude, and preferred to approach others for company rather than be approached. StormChaser was bold and friendly, and although she started out a little shy about her magic, before long she was showing it off to any clan member who asked about it, in a dramatic and theatrical style. The two of them didn't seem like the type that would fit together very well. And yet, somehow, they kept being seen together. Whether it was Straton seeking out StormChaser or vice verse, no one in the clan was sure. It just seemed to happen. But she had the unusual ability to make the usually serious pearlcatcher smile, or even laugh occasionally. And despite their differences, he saw in her someone who was as driven to seek her goals, and as attached to the good of the clan as he was. Together, as Straton seems to do so often, they match surprisingly well.
No one's weak just because they're small.
