While flying through Sornieth, looking for treasure and gems, Smaug encountered the dragons of Bloodrot. Surprisingly, they were willing to give him some of their treasure, one one condition. He had to join Bloodrot. Unable to find treasure anywhere else without facing opposition, he agreed, and though he'd much rather live on his own with his own hoard, he stays with the clan and follows their rules, knowing that few others would show him the same kindness.
Smaug is based on the dragon from "The Hobbit". Although Smaug is supposedly a red dragon, the movies portray his scales as being more of a dusty color. He guards the treasure of the old dwarven kingdom of the Lonely Mountain which he took over along with destroying the neighboring kingdom of Dale.
